Has anyone else here ever experienced intermittent low-grade fevers that have lasted for years or even decades with no diagnosis or known cause?. When I say "low grade fever", I'm referring to a temperature that fluctuates throughout the day, rising to as much as 100 degrees but usually staying in the 99+ range before returning to normal and then back up again (and not caused by activity). These low-grade fevers can often be accompanied by a warm, hot or "under the weather" type of feeling. Some days the temps stay in the normal range or even go below normal. I have been having these off and on episodes myself for decades and have had just about every test imaginable and almost always, they come back "normal". I have a history of IBS, GERD, Gastritis, Lactose Intolerance, Chronic Sinusitis, Allergic Rhinitis, Deviated Septum, Cervical Arthritis w/ bone spur, Tourettes w/ head jerks, OCD, GAD, Panic Attacks and a few others I can't think of right now. I'm middle-aged, don't smoke or drink and don't take a lot of meds. Can anyone relate?. Thanks very, very much for your input!.

Hi BlueJay49,
Have you been to a rheumatologist at all? I'm also wondering if you have been tested for any auto-immune diseases. It's also not uncommon for people to run a normal higher or lower temp than the usual 98.6. Could this be your "normal"? Also, arthritis can cause a person to run a low grade fever. Could this be a possibility for you? I hope you find an answer soon. I'm sure it's very frustrating to you. Take good care! sabby |

Hi BlueJay,
This is one of several threads you have started in the health forum, all roughly about the same things. Why don't you stick to one thread so that everyone knows everything that is going on and try replying to the questions that people bother to ask you after taking the time to read your posts. Splitz |

Thanks for the reply. Nope, never been to a rheumatologist but my Neuro did a lot of tests like reumatoid factor, ANA and a whole bunch of other tests and all came back negative. Really strange. I do have pretty bad neck arthritis and can hear a lot of cracking and popping sometimes. Strange thing is, I had this fever thing going back years before the arthritis ever became an issue so I'm totally stumped.

Well, I guess the question is this, how does this affect your daily life? Does it interfere with much of your life or is it more of a nuisance kind of thing that you can deal with and still have a relatively good life?
I still think it's a good idea to follow up with a rheumatologist. Even if your neuro did a work up on a lot of stuff, I think it's worth following up with an expert in that field. There are many other auto-immune issues out there that can be tested for. Good luck! |

Was running a temp like that for almost a year.....they never did determine what was causing it. It could have been any number of things. I had messed up my body so bad with OD's & not eating, & had so many horrible side effects from the meds I was prescribed & in & out of the psych & medical hospitals. Don't think my body really knew what it was supposed to be like or do.....but after that year, it went back to normal also.
Sometimes it's just our new normal. Hope you find out something.....but don't be surprised if you don't.

Yes. I went months and months with a fever like that. I was put in the hospital, and they ran test of every kind, X-rays, etc. They could find nothing, and I was diagnosed as a "Febrile female.' LOL
Eventually the fever subsided, and nothing ever came of it. According to my doc, it must have been some sort of virus that just never landed anywhere. ![]() |
