I don't have health insurance but needed some blood tests done to check my iron level as I am very anemic. I paid out-of-pocket for the doctor's visit to get the blood test order. His office wanted me to make another appointment just to hear the results. I asked the gal if I could just get the results over the phone and she said it would be better to see the doc in person. I asked if other people got their results over the phone and she said sometimes so I asked if I could get mine by phone also. Is that ok?

Hello, TerryL!
In the USA -- 45 CFR 164.524 - Access of individuals to protected health information 45 CFR 164.508 - Uses and disclosures for which an authorization is required My understanding is that doctors/offices may not deny you access to your medical information (test results included) except in a limited number of cases. Though some people have gotten test results over the phone, you may have to appear in person to prove your identity. Depending on the tests and the results, however, it may be in your best interest to meet with the doctor so you fully understand what the results mean (and don't mean).

In ON at least, no Dr's office will give test results over the phone.

My doctor gives me access to most of my file/record online, including test results.
It is perfectly fine to ask and see if they can do this for you. Gosh, they charge so much for an office visit! However, if you are *very* anemic, there might be a reason the doctor would think it is necessary to see you in person again. So you can come up with a plan of treatment together, or discus dietary changes to help your anemia, or possibly to get an injection. Maybe if you go back and begin treatment, you could ask the doctor to note your file that you can obtain test results by phone in the future. |

Thanks for all your feedback. I will have to think about this.. I wish my records were all online. I didn't even know that was possible, have never seen that...
