I think I have a case of poison ivy. It started on my hip and creeped down my lower thigh and now I have patched on my torso- ugh. I went to the doc bc it just looked like a weird rash- no pus or bubble blisters. She thought it was a bacterial infection and gave me a script for ointment which made it more itchy. Now I have stopped that and think it is indeed poison ivy. How do u know for sure? Also wouldn't the doc have recognized it as such?

Now I'm all paranoid it's a staff infection or something serious. Oatmeal baths are helping but 1% hydro-cortisone isn't touching it. Any suggestions?

Doggiedo, never had poison ivy myself, but I know the rash comes from direct contact, either with the plant sap or the fluid from the blisters. Sounds like yours is spreading on it's own. Why don't you give your doc's office a call?
Thanks for this!

I would follow up in the interim with the doctor.

If it is poison ivy, there is also an over the counter gel product available in most pharmacies or groceries for poison ivy/oak/sumac called "Tec Nu" that can be applied to help prevent the itch and spread if it is indeed one of them. It is what my doc recommended until I could get in to see him. Call to find a pharmacy or grocery that has it near you. The Tec Nu can also be used to wash sheets, towels, and clothes to remove the oils to help prevent future spread, which is really important, as the oils won't come out with normal detergent. It can also be used to wipe down/wash off laundry baskets, dog leashes, gardening tools, etc. that have come in contact with the oils.

Please call the doc and wishing you the best of luck; I hope you find some relief soon!
