I have my first appointment today with the Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist, to see if he can figure out why I keep choking on my food when I try to swallow.

I'm really happy I got into see someone so quickly - the referral only took 3 weeks.

I just hope he can help figure out what's wrong and that it's nothing serious.

Good luck and wishing the best for you. Hope they find out what's wrong and that it isn't too bad. Glad you got in so quickly.

I'm glad you could get in, too. I've heard of people needing their esophagus stretched. Maybe that's what you'll need....

Hope it won't be a big deal of a problem. Most likely not.

I hope that your appointment with the ENT doctor went well, and that you're getting help in fixing the problem asap. Gentle hugs to you ~ please do let us know what happened at the ENT doctor's visit.

Well the appointment was brief - he basically looked in my throat and felt all up and down the front of my neck.

Next step is he's sending me for a Barium X-Ray.

I asked him how long that'd likely take & he said I'd probably get an appointment within 3 weeks, which would be good.

All of this is making me feel really grateful for our public health care system.

Hi splitimage,

I hope you are scheduled for an x-ray quickly!

I wanted to add that my best friend has been experiencing the same thing and that it's been diagnosed as being caused by anxiety. One of his therapists was going to work on some relaxation/meditation techniques with him.

Anyway, just wanted to mention this to you and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,

I wanted to let you know drinking the barium isn't bad at all. The last time I did it, the barium was strawberry flavored with a bit of chalky texture thrown in.

It's very good that you're getting medical tests run to see what the Drs find. I had and sometimes still have, problems swallowing food and it's due to anxiety.

I wish you the very best!

Jan

Really. I felt like i drank concrete. Bleh. It wasn't painful or anything, but i certainly prefer the shakes at sonic. I thought it was pretty disgusting but better than say maybe drinking buttermilk.

That's interesting that anxiety can cause problems with swallowing - I don't think that's my problem, as my anxiety is pretty well under control.

And thanks for the feedback on the Barium. I'm really worried about that, that it'll be really disgusting - I think if what they give me is flavoured, I can handle it a bit better. I guess I need to think about it as something that's got to be done.

I didn't find the Barium bad at all. Of course, as was said, I'll take a Sonic milkshake over it any day.

I had the same aspect of this test. You drink the Barium, and they watch via some sort of real time X-ray how well your esophagus is working. The Barium allows the espophagus to show up. Doesn't take long at all. At least I think that's what they will be up to.
