Hi guys. Long time. I have a question that maybe someone could answer, or someone could steer me into a proper forum to ask it. I wanted to know if a person is dehydrated and continues to drink only coffee, will this make the person even more dehydrated? I know that coffee acts the same way as alcohol: drink one, pee two. Lol. There's lots of water in coffee, of course, but doesn't it just all flush out because of the diuretic effect of the coffee itself? Just wondering how dehydrated someone can become by only drinking coffee and nothing else. Thanks, guys!

Recent studies have actually suggested that coffee in moderation does not cause dehydration Link to summary. It can still have negative effects in large doses though due to the caffeine intake. Water is always the best option if possible

I don't think it's nearly as dehydrating as alcohol. But best to add some other liquids with no diuretic qualities?

Are you eating, however?

Coffee is not dehydrating:
Coffee Myth-Busting: Cup Of Joe May Help Hydration And Memory : The Salt : NPR I lived on coffee, beer and potato chips in my mid-20's; one of the things I would definitely change if I could go back and do it again. I would get a genetic test to see how you metabolize caffeine though; I'm a "slow" metabolizer and drinking too many cups could/may have (ah, youth!) hurt my heart. http://www.geneplanet.com/genetic-an...etabolism.html

Thanks, mazing. Dang, I was actually hoping that it would increase dehydration. I am a little tired of this world and was hoping to slip into a nice coma. Amazing that it doesn't dehydrate with all the bathroom trips you make from drinking it. LOL.

Hi rainyday107. Do I know you? Your name has a familiar ring to it. *smile* Yes, alcohol is definitely more dehydrating, but I don't want to get drunk. Lol. I was hoping to speed up the dehydration process while still enjoying at least a coffee. I guess that's too much to ask. I'm just tired and hopeless....not in the mood to drink alcohol, no matter how dehydrating it may be. But thanks for the reply!

Hi healingme4me. Thanks for getting back to me. I'm clicking on the "Hugs" link for each reply, but I don't know if you are seeing it. I hope everyone who responded to my question knows that they are getting a hug back from me. Anyways, am I eating? Very little. I know that water can be extracted from the foods we eat, so that would rather defeat the purpose. I just thought it would be nice to enjoy a coffee while continuing to dehydrate. I'm not very hungry anyways....I don't have anything that drives me to eat. My life is pretty hopeless now. Thanks for the question. *hugs*

Hi Perna. You're the second person who has told me that coffee is not very dehydrating. Dang! I'm actually looking for a quicker route to being dehydrated....without exercise, of course (lol)....and I thought that coffee might speed up the process. I just want a quick, painless way to slip away from this hopeless existence. Not eating and drinking seems to take so long....the days last forever. I enjoy coffee, and I thought that drinking it might actually get me there quicker. I'm sorry that you may have hurt your heart due to your diet in your youth. I love my morning mug of coffee to get me going....but I don't have any "going" left to do. Still would like that coffee, though. Lol. Thanks for sharing with us. Take care.
