Someone close to me keeps getting ill with the above. Does anyone know how to prevent it or any home remedies? Has anyone experienced it?

Depends on the cause. Some yiu can't prevent due to existing disease , hormonal imbalance. However, most causes is dirnking too much water which may be due to another condition, so a diuretic would take the water out, balancing the salt and water more. Or the body not filtering out the fluids. I'm curious have they been in the hospital. If that's the diagnosis, the person should have been told what to do. How old is the person and what medications do they take, what diseases do they have? Either organ or hormonal

Ps I have not experienced it
Thanks for this!

The person is my Nan (nearly 80) she was hospitalised and put in rehab last year, but is experiencing the onset again and the doctors won't do much. She's on limited fluids but is getting worse again.

Thanks for your input xx

You are a good friend in helping to learn more about it in support.

There typically can be some kind of underlying disease or hormonal process that can cause the unbalance or an issue of fluid balance causing the problem. That should be evaluated to find while treating the symptoms. There are so many things that can cause hyponatremia. It should not however go untreated. You could encourage her to find a doc who will help if her current doc will not.

Perhaps this might help explain better in this link to the Mayo Clinic; it discusses the definition, symptoms, causes, risks, testing, treatment, etc.:
Hyponatremia Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic

I have this problem too. I went to the Dr. after months of nausea, dizziness, trouble breathing, weakness etc. and collapsing. He thought the herbs I was taking for depression were causing my symptoms.
After chest ex-rays and blood work, my Doc left me a message to call him. Took me a day before I got his message and the weekend before we talked. He said I had to go to the emergency room and get a saline IV. I was told if I didn't go, brain damage from swelling, coma and death could occur.
The ER Dr. told me to drink less water, eat more salt and drink sports drinks that had sodium in them.
I am still struggling with balancing my sodium and fluids. I have no insurance and haven't had more testing to see why this is happening.
Now my legs and feet swell and hurt when I first try to walk on them. Too much sodium maybe?
Sorry I can't offer you any better advice for your nana.
I think I did read something about antidepressants causing this problem.
Thanks for this!

I'm so sad to hear to you are struggling with this. I truly hope your doctor can support and monitor you. I'm sure feet swelling is something to do with water balance. I pray this gets sorted for you.
