I'm just looking for advice on what to do as I have a 5 and a half hour shift (retail sales associate - mostly work on the registers) after having an ingrown toe nail removed that morning (Monday). A little less than 8 hours between the procedure and my shift, so the numbing shots will wear off by then, and having had this done 4 times already this year, I know I'm going to be in serious pain. Of course I'll take Motrin beforehand, and keep it elevated and iced before work, but is there anything I can do at work? It's not like I can sit or put my feet up. I don't even know if my work shoes will fit over the bandage.

Could you maybe switch shifts with another worker that way it would give yourself another day or so to recover ?

I only started the job last week and it's only one worker with one manager a shift, so I haven't met any coworkers to ask to switch with.

Do you have any open-toed flat shoes or sandals? Maybe if you explain the situation to your manager s/he'll let you wear them instead of your regular work shoes for a couple days. Customers really can't see much of your feet if you're at the cash register. Hope the procedure goes well for you and that your manager is understanding.

Thanks. I was hoping that they'd let me wear a flip flop on the bad foot just for that evening, I'll have to ask. It's a very laid back environment, so I think it'll be okay.

I would talk to the manager when you get there, see if it turns out not to be busy if you could work fewer hours or if she knows another employee she could call to come in/trade a couple hours with you.
