I tripped on a carpet and fell on my knee last week. The floor below must be concrete. I have a hideous rainbow from my foot to my mid thigh. Thank the lucky stars I didn't break a bone, but despite ice, pain killers, trying to rest, I have a lot of pain. Yesterday I had to spend all day at school and my leg swelled so badly my shoes bruised my upper foot! I foolishly gardened for 2 hours on the weekend. Of course the painkillers masked the damage til my leg swelled. Idiot me! I'll see the doctor on Thursday, I hope, if I don't break down and taxi to the hospital first. I have never had a bruise cluster half a metre long before. It goes all the way around my leg, near the knee.

Anyone with experience or knowledge, feel free to chime in.

So sorry, H3rmit. As someone who takes three prescription pain meds and still hurts sometimes, I understand. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

Yep, ya gotta let this thing heal. No gardening for awhile, ya hear?

I am glad you didn't break any bones. But bruises and swelling are bad enough. I hope you will be well soon.

Aren't you on crutches?
Thanks for this!

Thanks for asking. Amazingly I am not on crutches. I'm 50+ but I always had a lot of muscle from doing heavy work. I guess this protected my knee a bit and keeps me going. The first 2 days I would have neede crutches, but instead I missed school and stayed in bed. I could 't handle transit that day. Stairs, bumping, etc.

3 prescription pain meds? Ouch. Do you have a chronic health problem or something temporary?

I find the herbal sleep pills help me relax at night a bit through this painful time.

So sorry for the pain! As one who bruises ~ugh~ so easily, I can say, yes, I have had enormous bruises. I don't know if you are in favor of any natural healing stuff, but I use Arnica, in gel form to put on topically and in tiny pellets under the tongue, to start the healing process. It is not magic, but it does truly speed the healing...just a thought.
Please be careful! YIMT

Yes, we did use arnica gel at first, but now we are out! What is YIMT - not yummy in my tummy, I think . . I did google but my head is not that clear. I should be studying for an upcoming exam on Thursday.

Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't able to see the doctor today, but I still think I should. I have new bruising, on my feet, even though my shoes weren't tight this time. By the time I got to school after the 1-hour commute, I was physically drained and mentally not clear. Took me a while, and I completed at most half the exam. This is very unusual for me. I'll be fine grade-wise, but physically it still feels up in the air (more like down in a pit).

I need a nap. I'm glad I have no more school responsibilities until September.

Finally I feel like I'm on the mend. I started taking iron tablets, since I heard the extensive bruising can temporarily lock away iron reserves. I started to feel peppier right away. I have been prescribed iron several times, so I knew which kind to take and had it handy. Knee etc still stiff and achy, but I'm not on constant painkillers. Thanks for listening.

So sorry to hear! That sounds seriously painful, are you sure there is no fracture. You should try to move that appt up if you can. Get well soon.

Thanks - it seems the pain is in the muscles above my knee, mostly, and sometimes my back, which makes esense since my gait is off. Very tight, can't bend a lot. RICE still helps. Wouldn't a fracture hurt intensely?

If the knee doesn't sort out this week, I will have to see the doc, and maybe he'll send me to my wonderful physiotherapist.

Thanks, I have started feeling better the past 2 days. Saw the doc today, and she didn't think I needed an x-ray, and I'll get better by continuing RICE and appropriate exercise. I appreciate everyone's support. Thanks again.
