Anyone have experience with special diets for various health issues. I am seeing a nutritionist soon, but I am curious how others manage their restrictions and maintain healthy balance. Ive been on a renal diet for a couple of months and have lost 40lbs because of it. Hence why I am going to a nutritionist. Did anyone else struggle trying to compensate for what they were lacking?

Hi ChaoticInsanity
I lost a lot of weight on changing my diet over to lean meats like chicken and fish, protein fruit shakes, and eating a lot more vegetables. I also take supplements such as omega 3 fatty acids. I also incorporate vitamins like magnesium, calcium and Vit D3 for the winter months especially. I hope none of this clashes with your renal diet but being 30 pounds lighter is such a great thing. I wish you the best. |

Being 30lbs pounds lighter is a good thing and congrats to you for accomplishing that! Unfortunately my dilemma is innability to gain wait due to the restrictions. I need to gain at least 30 to be back where I was. Any ideas on how to take in more calories. The issue is most of my diet is low calorie and I fill up before I can take in the amount I need.

I have Fibromyalgia.. I have learned that certain foods are just terrible for me and make my pain worse and also causes me more depression issues.
I cut out carbs, I might have "a" carb twice a month at most, I miss it , I wont lie, But when I do have it , my pain increased and I feel bogged down, sluggish and an increase in depression. ( Bipolar) I never eat or drink anything that has artificial sweeteners of any kind. I cut any added sugar out of my diet as well. I use lemon juice versus Salt. Loads of herbs to flavor my meals. No fast food , No processed food. I avoid dairy also. Okay so what can I possible eat then? I just eat "clean foods" non processed, loads of veggies, lean meats, fruit. I do pay attention to foods that have been genetically altered or have a gazillion mgs of sodium listed on a raw chicken, I mean really? why does a whole raw chicken need salted added? Yes you have to pay attention to details. Many people say its too expensive to eat healthy, well for me its not, I use to spend alot more buying junk. Plus I seemed to just snack all the time on chips and stuff. Now if I want sweet I have some fruit, or a hot cup of flavored tea, zero calories, I currently have an addiction to Blueberry tea. lol It takes some getting us too, You need to plan ahead so your not stuck needing to just hit a drive thru. The first 2 weeks are tough when changing your eating habits. But wow does food taste so much better once your sticking to healthy stuff. Oh and yes its still possible to go out for meals, You just need to think about what are good choices . Once a month ? I do have a day of carbs, potatoes, bread, pasta (whatever I want the most) yep all the weight gaining stuff. .. I feel like hell for 3 days but hey, its worth it once a month or so to chow down . lol
