I'm a new member but am popping in here to ask a question because I don't know where else to begin. A Google search brought up nothing...

What does it mean when you see words backwards? I'm in my mid forties, not dyslexic (am pretty good at reading), and this morning I had the strangest experience of seeing a sign on a bus backwards. (the destination sign) I was driving to work, where I pass these buses every day so am very familiar with their signs and how the buses display them. And I glanced up at an oncoming bus and the destination sign appeared backwards. And because I'm so familiar with what these buses say, I thought to myself, "How odd that the sign for the Small Road bus is backwards!"

I looked away at traffic for a moment, then back at the bus, and it was normal (and, the bus was a little closer to me).

Why would I suddenly have that distinct perception that something I was reading was backwards? It came and went so quickly, it seemed to me that something neurological had briefly happened to confuse my brain. But I can't find any information on such a phenomenon. Anyone else ever have this happen?

Hello, onetruename, and welcome to Psych Central! We will need to wait to see if anyone else has had this experience.

You might consider calling your doc if this experience happens again. Maybe you need to see an eye doctor.

I have this happen every now and then. It's usually with certain groups of numbers, but I have mild dyslexia. If a 6 or 9 appears inside a group of numbers I will flip it into the other. But upon seeing it a second time it looks correct. sometimes I will write my numbers upside down. I figure it's neurological and not the health of your eyes failing. I've never experienced entire words or signs however. Was there anything different about your day? Extra cup of coffee? Three hours less of sleep?

About a month ago, I had a very similar experience. I was in my living room, looking down and reading something on my phone, and through my perriferals I noticed the entire room around me was completely opposite. The entire room was completely backwards, even my position seemed to go from facing south to facing north, and this caused such immediate confusion, I looked up from my phone to see that everything was normal. Ive never had any issues with dyslexia, and thought maybe I had just experienced a brain fart, or glitch in the universe? Very weird experience, and haven't found anything related to it online with the exception of your post! I don't have any answers, but at least I know im not the only one who's had something like this happen to them!

Hi Alecdbaca,

Welcome to PC!

I notice that this is your first post. The first 5 posts are held for moderator review and release. You'll see a delay in the releasing of those posts into the forums. Every post after 5 is as soon as you click the send button.

As for your experience, have you had a chance to establish appointments with your primary doctor, ophthalmologist and perhaps consider referral to a neurologist. Maybe even bring a printed copy of your description of your experience? Sounds frightful, indeed.

I hope that you find your experience at PC warm and supportive.
