Has anyone else got/had this? It came back from my blood test but I got very little info from Dr, just a note advising supplementation.

I have been Googling and the symptoms, fatigue, muscle weakness, depression describe much of what I've been feeling last few months. I'm hopeful supplementation might make me feel okay again.

Yep mine was 12 on my test. I asked for it because my muscles had been really hurting for unknown reason and I've had slightly low before. This time though? Fatigue, depression, GI issues and such. I'm taking 2,000 iu daily for three months then retesting!

Very common in the winter. Feel better!

Oh yeah. I haven't had blood work, I kind of just started taking some really cheap caps out of nowhere. I know I'm very likely deficient, given how infrequently I go outside and how fair skinned I am - I was only taking about 800IUs daily and the effects on my mood were almost immediate.

Thanks everyone, I'm really pleased to read some of you got immediate effects with supplementation, and hoping the same will happen for me.

I got told to take the 1000 dose, which is the higher one, and that there was no need to be retested. I'm confused by this because how do I know a) it's worked and b.) if I should either stop taking the Vit D or go on a lower maintenance dose after the deficiency is corrected.

I thought 30 was the lowest you should be. At 29 I was told " still a little low. Docs were happy when I got to 34.
Originally I was given a prescription that I took once a week. I then switched to over the counter supplements. 2000 IU was not enough. Better but still not good enough. I now take 3000 a day and am good.

You really should get rechecked after being on supplements. Low Vitamin D is extremely common, but only recently has it been a more common test. I was diagnosed 5 years ago and don't expect to ever be free of supplements.

Yes I think I'll ask about retesting in a few months, it seems sensible.

The strange thing is not many people got more sun than me last summer, I was out every day and as I was training for a half marathon I was wearing vest/shorts so lots of skin exposure - I still have faint tan lines.

Really out of whack at the moment, running slower, out of breath, taking longer to recover at the end of a run. Falling asleep during daytime. Just hope this supplementation will make a difference.

I've never been officially diagnosed with low vitamin D, but my gp tells nearly all her patients to take a supplement, since it's so common. I take 1000IUD a day. I noticed as soon as I went on it, a positive impact on my mood, and if I run out and forget to get a new bottle, after a few days I notice my mood dropping.

I've mentioned this to my pdoc, and he said that vitamin D deficiency is a major contributing factor to depression for people, and that if my gp hadn't already told me to take a supplement, he would have.

The symptoms you describe could well be simply a vitamin D deficiency…However they could also indicate issues with your Thyroid. As many doctors often missdiagnose thyroid illness as depression, it may be worthwhile to have your thyroid levels checked.

Thanks, yes they checked my thyroid and a whole lot of other things in that blood test so it seemed fine.

Since I last posted I started a course of SSRIs and over two months in my mood is much better, the fatigue has improved although I still get sleepy sometimes, my athletic performance is better too (although not as good as before). I suspect the SSRI is making a difference, although I'm also taking a daily Vit D too.

As for retesting, my Dr has said just to take the Vit D for the rest of my life, she does herself apparently.

Last time I had my blood tested I was low on Vitamin D. So, I take regular Vitamin D pills to post the Vitamin D in my system. Of course Seattle is none for not getting a lot of sun for most of the year.

I've only had vitamin D mentioned as a thinktank about myelin sheath repair, the dosages well into the tens of thousands. Upon looking into it, there's two types of vitamin D supplements. Either way, I work outside now. Perhaps it's time for me to consider which type of sunblock to use instead of worrying about how much more milk I can consume? :\

Vitamin deficiencies are very insidious and wreck all sorts of strange havoc on our bodies that can escape attention for a long time.

Do you know if you have any other vitamin deficiencies? I would get retested to simply make sure that the therapeutic vitamin D supplementation is being absorbed properly by your body -- vitamin deficiencies can be a red flag for malabsorption syndromes or different types of anemias.

Lot of things can cause it. In my case, there simply is no sunlight here in winter, plus having lupus (a lot of autoimmune illness "eats" vit D, B6, B12 and iron). Also hidden celiac can cause deficiencies. If taking statins you will have vit D deficiency since cholesterol is what vit D is made from.
