My doctor just recently made the decision to treat me for full blown diabetes. She took me off glucophage because it's hard on my kidneys so I'm not taking any med for the diabetes; just watching my diet.

I've also been taking my blood sugar levels for my own info and because my MD asked me to take it when I get real sleepy in the afternoons. Maybe she's trying to figure out what's doing it to me. Two possibilities are my low kidney function and/or the nodule on my thyroid.

Yesterday at 2:45 pm I got sleepy; my blood sugar was 148. (Below 100 is best).
Last night, after dinner it was 127.
Today at 12:30 pm it was 172 and I was sleepy.
Had some cereal with Splenda and a bit of milk at 2 pm.
Right now, (3:30pm) I can't hardly keep my eyes open. It's at 128.

It's not making any sense to me. I don't think it has anything to do with my blood sugar. Diabetes, anyone? It would seem to me that my sugar would go up when I eat, but it seems to go down. It also goes down when I have a regular Coke! Diabetes, anyone? Diabetes, anyone? Diabetes, anyone?

Diet can manage this, but it takes alot of effort. What kind of cereal did you have? What is the gylcemic load of the carbs? You know you can't just watch sugar content as in "sugar" wording but all sorts of things that create the same reaction in the body.

I can't eat carrots or bananas because the "sugar" goes straight into the bloodstream and affects the insulin levels. I'm not diabetic, I'm functionally hypoglycemic and trying to keep from becoming diabetic.

Losing weight is the overall best thing to do to manage or eliminate this problem.

I'm sorry you're having to treat for this. Diabetes, anyone? Not only is it expensive, but it's a real hassle not to mention the highs and lows you'll get if your body doesn't respond the way you expect.

my brother gets really sleepy eating certain foods and at times I do too. we are both diabetic. it sucks. no potatoes or starchy foods at all. have to cut way down on the carbs to get the blood sugar under control. also you could be insulin resistant.

It was Safeway brand Bran Flakes. Sugars are at 5% alone. Sugar is third on the list and fructose is fifth on the list. The wheat should have raised my blood sugar. That's what's confusing me. My blood sugar goes down when I eat normally. The Coke isn't in my diet, of course, but it lowered my blood sugar, too. Diabetes, anyone?

I can eat certain fruits but they either have to be small or I can have just a portion of a whole.

So far, it hasn't been difficult at all to stay on the prescribed diet... except that it calls for more food than I'm used to consuming. My dr said I could eat only one thing listed for every meal but to not skip snacks. haha! If she only knew! Most times I go with only "lunch" or sometimes just "dinner". She read me the riot act about no breakfast. Diabetes, anyone?

How is it expensive if I hardly eat and I'm not on any meds yet, though? Diabetes, anyone?
