Today, I noticed a two and half, maybe 3 inch long and millimeter wide scratch on my left arm, right near the elbow. I have absolutely no memory of it happening, nor do I SI. This sort of thing happens to me all the time, and now I'm beginning to wonder how these scratches get there.

Sometimes they are deep enough to actually break the skin, and bleed a tiny bit, but most of the time, they are just there and scabbed over. I first notice scratches like this when they either burn, or when I absentmindedly scratch an itch to find it's actually a scabbed over scratch.

At first I wrote them off as coming from the cats I had throughout my life, but now that I don't have any, I don't have an explanation to where they are coming from. I told my mom about this phenomenon years ago and she reasoned I was scratching myself in my sleep. Wouldn't you wake up if you scratched yourself deep enough to bleed a little?

Another thing, it's the dead of winter and I was wearing a long sleeved shirt all day today, and I know the scratch didn't appear until today, because I took a shower yesterday and it wasn't there.

What's going on?

I also suspect you are scratching in your sleep. I often pick at myself in my sleep and don't remember it.

When my mom was a girl, she kept having a dream that she was getting poked with a pin, but she was finding actual pricks and scratches from the dream. Then she finally found a sewing needle in her bed! Something is scratching you that you"re not finding. It could be yourself.
