I take four Welchol a day to help control my colitis. It's usually used as a cholesterol medicine. My cholesterol has been so low in the past that I was forced to eat high cholesterol foods.

To my absolute shock yesterday I learned that my cholesterol is so high I am at risk for heart attack and stroke. Apparently, cholesterol can be very high due to hereditary factors.

I go tomorrow to have another fasting blood test and then she said she'd start me on another kind of medicine. I have to change my entire life style. I can't tolerate fruits and vegetables because of the colitis, so it's not like I can run out and start eating apples or broccoli.

I went to the store and bought some Cheerios and lactose free milk. Other than that, I don't know what to do. No wonder I'm so tired all the time; I have sludge in my veins.

Thanks to all who read this. I just needed to talk to someone about this.

Jan

((( HUGS ))) Jan........ I understand where you are coming from for I have to take meds for my high cholesterol due to both diet and hereditary issues - as my body naturally makes more than it can use.

Hang in there and try to eat the best you can and try out that Whey Protein Powder I told you about once a day...... it will work.

I am not for sure what you Cholesterol level is, but mine use to 379 - Ouch!
I thought my doctor was going to chock me...... now my level is at 220, so we are getting there with Vytorin.

Jan here are some other foods that are good for curbing cholesterol, from Dr Phil's "The Ultimate Weight Solution Food Guide", a great book that lists a food's serving size, calories, protein, carbs, fat/saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sugars, and sodium.

Page 137 also has "Top 30 Foods for Curbing Cholesterol" and I'll include some that aren't vegetables or fruits in this partial list:

Legumes such as:

Kidney beans

Cranberry beans

Butter beans

Black beans

Navy beans

Lentils

Pinto beans

Great Northern beans

Garbanzo beans

Soy-based foods

and

Oat bran

Oatmeal

Bran flakes

All-Bran

Pearl Barley

if you eat potatoes,

Sweet potato

Acorn Squash

Potato with skin

I hope this helps and I hope your new med does too.

Oh Rhap!!!!!!!! Having a level of 379 had to terrify you!!!!! You are such a health oriented person. I'm sure you were in shock!

I am so very glad your levels are down. I'll let you know what the Dr puts me on. I don't know if she'll try to take me off the Welchol or leave me on it and add another type.

Hugs,

Jan

(((((((((( Echoes )))))))))

Thank you so much. I can eat a little bit of squash. Maybe I can find some. I've never heard of cranberry beans. I'll try a sweet potato and see if I can handle it.

Hugs,

Jan

I've had Cheerios, a baked sweet potato, half a low fat sandwich and more Cheerios today. I'm trying!

I took cinnamon capsules 500 mg. and lowered mine.
My doctor wanted to put me on drugs and i said no.
I also took the oatmeal and cheerios.

I heard aloe vera flavored should help your stomach.

Good luck.
