Does anyone know anything about cholesterol? My dad got back from the doctor Friday and was informed that his is 900. I know this isn't good, and I just want to know a bit more about it since I don't know much. Anyone?

900!? Are you sure his number is correct?
Most people get put on meds when they hit the 200s. My doctor put me on them when my bad cholesterol hit 124, since I am diabetic. It's now 74. With a level of 900 your dad must be practically a solid. I'd double check those numbers and then make sure he gets on medicine. I love the one I'm on. It's supposed to lower bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol. This link link might help. Good luck.

Yes, I know where he is coming from.... my cholesterol was found to be 894 when I was placed in the hospital 10 years ago due to heart problems brought on by my RA - the doctors found out that my body naturally made more cholesterol than I could use.... I will probably be on Lipitor for the rest of my life. Have your father follow up with his doctor, change his diet, drink plenty of water to flush the body and to take his medicine - DAILY! Good Luck.... BTW - my cholesterol level is around 180 now. LoVe, Rhapsody - ![]() |

Oh my! Mine is 118 total. I need to raise my HDL some though. They used to say anything under 240 was ok but they've learned so much more. Now they say total needs to be lower than that, but for women it turns out the the HDL level is more important ..and needs to be closer to 40 alone...and the LDL isn't as important. TC

900 is way high.
My got up close to 300 and I was put on a med. Now it's down to 180's. But it has gone back even on the med.

These numbers are frightening. I despair at my husband's eating habits and probable resultant cholestrol but he had a test about a week ago and everything was "fine" (I didn't get to see the actual reading).
I am sorry about your Dad MentalPollution!!

here below 200 is normal. his doctor probably gave him a diet plan to help bring it down and medication for instance I am on lipitor and don't need a diet plan because my Diabetic 2 diet plan is also one of I think 3 diet plans that are given to those with high cholesterol.
there is nothing you can do specifically for your dad. its basically up to him to follow the diet plan and medication that his physician gave him and soon he will be back in normal range with his cholestorol. |

i would google it and learn what i could. is your father overweight? and has he always had high levels? 900 is unheard of with me.
i'd be sure of the number and then i would be very supportive with his med plan and his eating habits. exercise is vital. cholesterol causes a buildup of plaque in our arteries and that deprives our heart of an adequate blood flow and that can call for bypass surgery. and, as always, no one solution works for everyone. so, MP, find out all you can about what's going on and talk to your dad. and good luck, love, pat |

I think the suggested total cholesterol number is under 150 now. With good (HDL) cholesterol above 60.

Thanks for the info everyone. Yes, 900 is right. I asked him again just to be sure.
No he isn't overweight. The only other medical condition he has is diabetes type 1. Can that somehow make his cholesterol be high like that? I'm just wondering if anyone knows. The doctor has him on 2 different cholesterol medicines, and he was already on a pretty strict diet. As far as I know he follows the diet well.. but I could be wrong. His levels have always been a little high.. but never 900! I'm going to do all I can to help him stick to his diet and meds. It scares me to know that his cholesterol is at a dangerously high level. Thanks everyone for helping me understand this a little better. ![]()

Absolutely! Diabetes mellitus and hypertension both cause high cholesterol levels. Hope they are able to help get it under control soon (((hugs)))

Yes, I can only recommend Lipitor. Last year I was disgnosed high LDL cholesterol. My bad eating habits show up after a few years. I can also say that it showed also on my psychical health - constant low moods, I felt like I was "lazy and stuffed" and was always nervous about myself. The doctor prescribed me Lipitor and I have changed my diet. And also started to exercise 3 times a week in gym and running rotoped every morning right after getting up from bed. I can only recommend changing your life habits, the person is feeling somehow more happy when he has some physical movement.

When I went into the hospital (as mentioned above) over tens ago due to my RA & Heart and the doctors found out that I also had high cholesterol of 894 they discovered (after some test) that my high cholesterol was due to my body making more than I personally needed... hence having such a high number despite me being a size 3 and only weighing 115 pounds.
I am still on cholesterol medicine to this day - Lipitor - and will probably remain on it for life as my levels never seem to be able to get down past 230 and my doctor would like to see it around 180 due to my medical conditions and heart issues. |

900 is something I've not heard of before, but that really doesn't mean anything!
Are you sure that isn't his "triglysioid number"? That isn't spelled correctly, but do you know what I mean?
