Since I'm temporarily off work due to sickness, this latest NHS link was emailed me from my place of work.

Wuhan novel coronavirus: what you need to know

I thought it could be useful for those here who are concerned.

I’m in one of the affected areas. And I have bills to pay so it’s not like I can just hide in my house. But it’s like one guy has it and who knows where he’s been and where those people have been and etc. soon we’re all gonna get it.

Hey guys, here are some useful tips on how to protect yourself from the coronavirus.

1. Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, or use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol.

2. Sneeze and cough into tissues or the crook of your elbow.

3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially people exhibiting respiratory symptoms and fever.

4. Stay home when you're sick.

I think its worth monitoring simply because China isnt known for being forthcoming with accurate information. But the flu has killed 15 million so I feel like its the virus we need to look out for.

As I previously advised above last January 10, here is an updated and very helpful news article from The Guardian national newspaper (UK).

How to protect yourself from coronavirus

While virologists say hand sanitising can help stop the virus, they say there is not much evidence that face masks help. I suggest that hand washing with soap is still the best cleaning practice, so continue to use soap if hand sanitiser has sold out.

When SARS came out years ago I was on high alert. The media fed my fears. This new word pandemic freaked me out. Years later when 800 people did die from SARS and 8000 were infected. The world continues to turn. Thing is that this conavirus is less deadly than SARS.

There are 8 confirmed cases in Australia. Australian-made coronavirus copy reaches high-security CSIRO laboratory in Geelong - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
We may feel afraid but in DBT therapy before we let our minds run rampant we need to check in with the facts. What are the facts? - There are things you can do as lists in access denied's post. Take precautions. High chances are you wont catch it. Even of you did you will get sick but are less likely to die.

I dont know if anyone will appreciate my very warped sense of humour but I reckon when I die, from whatever the cause it, it will be a good thing because I wont have to worry anymore. No more pain.

It may be bad but it's not yet that bad in my book. Each year over 60,000 people die from flu-related viruses. The media might be doing us no great favours by highlighting it as though its the end of the world. and no it's not the end of the world... not yet anyway.

I just saw an article 5 minutes ago that they are counting all cases and 70 thousand people have gotten it but 80% of those cases have been mild. So yes, the media is blowing this up way more then they have to.

Time will tell if the coronavirus can be successfully contained. However, I know that the elderly, ie. pensioners and those who are disabled and feel vulnerable, remain worried.

In these cases I try not to get too worried because of the media, but now I'm actually getting a bit worried, because now it came also to my country...not exactly where I live, but near. Plus, I'm "strange" and I worry more about "what if I have to stay home for a long time and can't work?" than for my health...

They said on the news “U.S is preparing for global pandemic” and I kinda want to go stock up on food today. I did finally get my flu shot at least.

I was searching my periodically 'Infection Control Nurse" brain, reading CDC etal and wondering a bit about the urgency of the coverage vs flu coverage.
But, epidemiologically, this is a great opportunity for the world health community to both limit the spread of a virus but to also pull out stops and Practice the measures they have developed over the (relatively 'safe') years. After all, it is only a matter of time (whether this generation or following...tomorrow or in 4 years...) before a virus as virulent as the 1918 flu (or other) decimates a good portion of the population (more now than ever before with travel options etc) if we are not well prepared and ready to implement necessary health measures.
(...my mother was sent to a tb sanatorium as a child...and I am old enough to remember that I wasn't allowed to go to the pool because of Polio, and some kids had metal braces on their legs to be able to walk...iron lungs)

This is getting really scary. I’m thinking of going to the store and stocking up on food and water. My mom says the media is just scaring people.

The threat of the corona virus spreading in the U.S. is very low. Read here: Yale New Haven Health | Influenza (Flu) vs Coronaviruses

Quote:
What is the risk of this coronavirus infection spreading in the United States?
Yale New Haven Health is monitoring the progression of the virus to keep our patients and staff safe. At this time, the risk of becoming infected with this new coronavirus in the United States is very low.
