My husband just went in for his yearly physical and this time it was not so good.

The doctor has him coming back in this coming Thursday to have some more fasting blood work done and an ultra sound of his liver and surrounding organs......... all this is due to these fasting blood results.

High Liver Enzymes - ?
High Blood Sugar - 120
High Cholesterol / Triglycerides - 315

* * * * * * * * * *

I was wondering if any one had any light to shed on these results and what they think maybe the cause of the them.... as I would like to be a little more informed before we see the doctor again.

I guess I am a little concerned that my husband could be heading down the road to Diabetes? - is 120 to high for blood sugar or is it more on the border line and can be controlled with Diet?

I know no one here is a doctor, but I would still like to hear your thoughts concerning these findings per any experience you may have had from your own health issues or problems of an ailing parent. Thx.

For a non diabetic yes. that is a high number esp if its a fasting.

However, if he just ate, thats a good number. otherwise it sounds pre diabetic. Are they going to test him again? IM a type 2 diabetic and come from a long line. I have lost 100 pounds and have a much healthier lifestyle. Its not bad news. if he lowers the sugar chances are the cholester will go down too. thats usually a sign of diabetes. However, that being said im not a doc. just my honest opinion. pm me if you have any questions.

Thanks for the reply....... and YES, all of those results were from him fasting for 12 hours.

I too am thinking diabetes, but then again only the doctor will be able to say for sure - and there are the high liver enzymes to consider as well.

My husband will be tested again this Thursday - Jan 3rd - fingers crossed and hoping a diet change will make all the difference.

Have him drink about 8 bottles of water a day. light exercise. quick walk around the block. add more protein, less carb. sugar is not the enemy. look for the 100 calorie packs in the cookie aisle. One pack is a great snack. this will all help. also think chromium picolinate. a natural supplement that usually helps a bit to. also go to. community.diabetes.org for more info. Let me know the results please? I am more than happy to answer any questions. Its not hard to be diabetic. Its a lifestyle change not a DIET......remember that and youll be fine...please pm when you get the results. Im here when you need me.

take care.

He is pre diabetic. My blood sugar has tested in that range recently. It can be controled with diet. My doc says I don't need meds yet. I have to watch the carbs and sugar is a carb. Eat lots of vegtables and exercise, of course. Get the book South Beach Diet. You can get it on Amazon.com for 5 cents plus 3.99 shipping. You don't have to use that diet, but you can learn a lot about carbs and how they work on your body in that book. It is written by a doctor. You can also get the book at your library.

You blood sugar will change every 1/2 hour. My doctor gave me a tester so I can see how I'm doing. Even if you fast for 12 hours it all depends on what you eat the night before. I can have a fast test of 143 and in the doctor's office it can be 88 without a fast. What really is important is the average.

Stay away from white flour. Eat lots of fiber. Watch the fruit too. Stay away from juice.

I don't know anything about the liver. His doc should put him on cholesterol meds ASAP.

Good Luck, I'll be curious to see what happens.

He has been on meds for high cholesterol level for a few years now (but the 315 really threw him out of the ball park this time)....... his doctor has instructed him to hold off on taking his arthritis & cholesteral meds until the results of his ultra sound and new fasting blood work comes back after Thursday.

Sugar numbers:

Apparently high sugar makes for high "bad" cholesterol:

Yes that would be great. i will be thinking of you. there are a lot of great ideas that everybody has posted. this is not a DEATH sentence. its a "get your butt into gear" sentence. I have lost 103 pounds in the last two years since being diagnosed as a type 2. I am healthier than most without diabetes. I worked hard to get where i am. but i can bike 100 miles at a stretch now. couldnt do that before. if he could spend one day in a body that feels good it would switch his thinking. dont nag. just be as supportive and try to help with meals. you will be fine. and if not......

you have us here.....pushing for you!

Take care....dont worry.....ask for help.

thinking about you

Yeah, if that 120 was fasting it is on high side for non-diabetic. I have been one for more than 10 yrs...my last cholesterol reading was high...my triglyseride was 488 and my HDL was low. But my sugars were the best they have been in a long long time. If diet and exercise don't improve his cholesterol, might have to find soem other route to help. If overweight might be pre-diabetic and diet and exercise is best if you can. Wish you luck, hubbies tend to get stubborn when told soemthing...just ask moggles hehe He always waits until I can say I Told You So!!!!! Gotta love it! ~ melanie

Yeah that is what the doctor said for him to do and I picked some up today...... and his doctor has all his meds on hold until the new test comes backs - his doctor is trying to give his liver time to clean its self out of all the old meds to make sure one of them is not the problem.

But poor man - I feel for him right now for he also has arthritis and he is not allowed to take any of his meds for it nor any over the counter pain relief.... I personally would die with out my pain meds for my RA.

OH GOD Rap!!! that poor man! my mom has chronic pain and i cannot imagine what he is going through. Now that being said that he can take supplements. have you ever tried MSM with glucosamine? its supposedly to replace the fluidity between joints and take pain away. I know hes got to let the liver replenish so i dont know if those would hurt. but try? might give the poor guy some relief? just throwing suggestions. Geez woman! you have a lot to contend with.

feel free to email me anytime. I hope this gets better quickly so he can take his pain meds. thats terrible!

Let me know if i can help in any way. Please?

Have a better day.

Glad to see he doesn't have a sugar problem. I'm still trying to get my sugar down naturally. I'm in the 140 range.
I take omega 3, 3000 mg a day.

If anyone knows of anything I can take to help me with this sugar naturally, please let me know.

Good luck to hub!

What you can take is cinnamon, which comes in pill form, and the normal form, which in my honest opinion lowers bg levels sigificantly. also alpha lipoic acid and chromium picolinate.

been a type 2 for years. let me know if i can help.
