Friends,

My husband was just diagnosed with this -- this week. He doesn't need to lose weight, just mainly get the concentrated sweets out of his diet.

Is there anyone here who is supporting their husband with this type of diagnosis?

It seems like the main thing is carb control.

I'm terrified of me and/or my husband getting this. I buy Diabetes-related cook and health books, etc. Don't do anything with them but do buy them! Type 2 Diabetes Thread

I'm not supporting a spouse in this, but am functionally hypoglycemic myself.

It isn't so much NO carbs, but healthy carbs. I do fine with whole wheat pasta, for instance.

I buy the sugar free everything, but not if it's sweetened with equal. The stuff in the blue package makes you "blue."

It's really "sad" for me, as I lost my sense of taste due to the injury, and very, very sweet and very red hot spicy are the only two things I get any sensation from... and losing sugar was tough. I still haven't battled through this yet, giving up one of the two things I sensed. Type 2 Diabetes Thread

While I'm on the sweetness thought, I am cautious about splenda though it sweetens nicely...but there's something about it's chemical reaction in the body that causes a chlorine enzyme??? (Goodness I must be tired, can't think.)

So I'm back to sweet n low... and each time I buy a box, I tell myself when this is gone, no more! But can't seem to do it, can't seem to give up sweet yet.

I do exceptionally well with apples. They are a real pick me up and feel good snack.

I don't do bananas nor carrots, as they are not processed like other naturally sweet foods, and go directly (so to speak) into the blood stream. I think with a balanced meal they might be ok, but I just eliminated them completely, so I don't have to think. Type 2 Diabetes Thread

Good wishes in this!

Bee and Perna,

Thank you for your supportive notes.

Sky,

I'm so sorry about your losing your ability to taste. (((((((Sky))))))). I can't imagine how hard that must be.

Thank you for all the good information!!!!

Friends,

Other than eating half of the one piece of triple chocolate cake my husband brought home from the store yesterday, he is doing wonderfully with his new reality.

He shops, b/c he's retired, and I'm not.

He is measuring his blood sugar, and has made a bunch of good changes in his diet.

The doctor believes he will be able to control his condition through diet. I tried to persuade him to have just 1/3 of the piece of the cake, but he dished it up when I was upstairs.
