I have had coffee since I was 13 years old. Every morning, one cup of black instant. I love coffee.

Since I was about 40 I knew that having coffee past 12 pm would be a mistake. But now I am wondering about giving it up completely.

I have noticed I am having trouble sleeping and I have lots of muscle twitching when I lie down at night. If I do have a second cup of coffee I can be sure I will have a really difficult time sleeping.

I also have been researching a diet and the diet calls for giving up coffee as it can inhibit weight loss.

I feel like maybe coffee effects you more as you age.

Has anyone else given it up as they got older?

I have stopped drinking coffee several times. The first few days are rough but then i feel a lot better. But i always go back to it.

I cannot have the second cup. I was having restless legs recently but i attributed it to weaning off topamax, a seizure medication, and high blood sugar. So i titrated back onto topamax, and increased my blood sugar med, and no longer have the restless leg.

I have noticed some sensitivity even to having chocolate after dinner. I know withdrawal is bad. When I was in my 20s I moved to another state and forgot the coffee and man, I was out cold for days after arrival with a wicked headache.

I have to go back to work for most of the month of June but after that I think I am going to give it a shot.

I've noticed coffee stalls my weight loss. I had coffee several days in a row last week. The scale didn't budge. I stopped the coffee and the scale instantly moved the next day.

I've been almost entirely a black tea drinker for quite a few years now. I used to enjoy coffee occasionally. But, as I've gotten older, I've found it just doesn't set well with me anymore. Nothing specific. It just leaves me feeling like I drank something I shouldn't have. Now, I'm actually working on getting off of regular black tea as well and instead drinking decaffeinated black tea, white tea, and chamomile tea. In fact I'm sipping a cup of chamomile tea as I type this.

Yes.. not sure but Tuesday I felt sick. In a weird way. Like I was wired.

When I was a kid I had Brazil for "international day" and coffee was a big export so I made that for my presentation, but, I drank like 10 cups...

This was a similar feeling on Tuesday.

Found out yesterday that there are 42 mg of caffine in a soda can.

I probably have 4 of those a day.

I am guessing I have about 300 to 400 mg per day with coffee and soda... so I am cutting back.

Still considering cutting back on the coffee but I got some blood tests yesterday and my B12 is low along with Ferritin.

That could explain twitching.

Are you exercising? 30 minutes on the bike makes me sleep like a baby. I took half a beta blocker last night (20 instead of 40 mg) because i thought i was out of them and i twitched like a dang fool. I took the other half this morning after the pharmacy messaged me and i feel a lot better. But i also didnt use my half teaspoon of instant espresso this morning. I do still use maxwell house intl coffee. Im italian, i cant give up my coffee!!!

Yes ironically I have been washing and cleaning every aspect of my 3 floor townhouse which got very bad during the pandemic and cat's illness. That only made it worse. I think I am weak muscled and the twitching is because I pushed the muscles too far.

Last night I took 2 ativan and used a weighted blanket to cut down on the twitching.

I did get a good 9 hours.

So I cut back to one the of instant yesterday and wow, I was out cold by 11. I ended up sleeping for 2 hours. Then last night I didn't fall asleep until 11 but the sleep was much better. I have been without coffee 2 x in my life... one on a trip to Europe where I was jet lagged anyway... and the coma like sleep I had was like last night.

Still having some twitching though but I did some streaching last night and it helped.
Thanks for this!

If your ferritin is low I’m guessing you’re advised to take iron supplements? Coffee or tea inhibits iron absorption if so, you can still have it just more than 2 hours away from a meal or supplement.

On the subject of caffeine sensitivity, I think some of us are more sensitive and it’s quite possible some of us become more so as we age. I personally have coffee only once a day but not every day.

Ha no my incompetent doctor told me that "ferritin is a sign of inflammation not iron"

Yup I will be ignoring her and looking for a new doctor.

I also didn't ask her advice I asked her to put in labs so I could get retested.

She gave me bad advice and failed to put in the labs.

I am taking a multi vitamin with iron and getting retested - probably so I don't have to deal with her.
