I **FINALLY** got an appointment with just a regular, family practice doctor, for this Friday, to get on meds. Probably just antidepressants for now...and if they make me manic then I guess we know what's wrong.

Question. Should I ask for any tests? I know a while ago someone told me I should get my thyroid checked. Never had it checked, that I know of. What else should I get checked? (physical/medical stuff that can look like mental illness or make it worse...)

Thanks.

I'm glad you got an appointment!!

Your doctor will probably draw a basic set of labs to make sure the basic chemistry of your body is in balance.

Most family doctors are not aware of the influence of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) on depression and will not order a test beyond the Finger Stick Blood Sugar level.

A Thyroid test would be indicated if you had clinical symptoms of hyper or hypothyroidism.

Anti-Depression medications are a good start. I think you should consider going to therapy while on these medications so you can reduce the frequency and intensity of any future episodes of depression, long after you are off medication.

If you haven't seen a doctor in a while, tell him/her that you'd like to have a physical and get up to date on your medical care. The labs he/she orders will depend on what you say about how you're feeling, your family history, your own history, your lifestyle, and your age. Be very open and honest because the information you provide is so important.

Some regular family docs don't prescribe psych meds and he/she may refer you to a psychiatrist for that.

Thyroid and, a general health screen panel are good things to have done.

Congrats on getting an appointment; it sounds like that took a lot of work.
