Folks -
Someone posted that not-wearing sunscreen was safe. I was very upset by this because it is THE major prevention we have against the deadiliest form of skin cancer and the other two major forms. I have reposted my response so that more people are likely to see it. ++++++++++++ Sunscreen is a MAJOR protector against the 3 major forms of skin cancer - Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma. Basal Cell is the most common form of skin cancer and Squamous Cell is the second most common form. According to the American Cancer Society, the most important factor for lowering the risk of these cancers is reducing your exposure to UV radiation (sunlight) by using sunscreen with SPF greater than 30, wearing a hat, wearing clothes, and wearing lipbalm. The most deadiliest form of skin cancer is melanoma. Excessive sun exposure, especially sunburn, is the most important preventable cause of melanoma. Heredity does play a part, but sun exposure is the BIGGEST risk factor that can be altered. PLEASE ALWAYS wear sunscreen. And that above post is completely incorrect. The association between prevention measures like sunscreen use and skin cancer is well documented. Google the American Cancer Society or the American Academy of Dermatology for more information. |
