I had an Upper Endoscopy today and was told that I have a 'hiatus hernia' and that the surgery would not be necessary and can cause more problems than good! Basically, I was told to take Zantac along with my Omeprazole and it should help. The other thing is there are foods and drinks to avoid....the stuff I like!

Anyways, has anyone had this or know of any possible ways I can help myself. I have looked it up and it just says to avoid heavy lifting, caffeine, etc.

I am overweight and am working on losing weight.

Thanks

Avoid spices, fats, dairy, red meat....stuff like that. I know it sux, but I have to do the same thing. I don't have what you have, I have really, REALLY bad heartburn. The valve at the end of my esophagus doesn't close all the time and if I eat those products, it burns and even comes up into my mouth when I lay down in bed. Zantac over the counter is not strong enough. Ask your doctor for the good one, it's a lot stronger and will help you more.

Good Luck,

Joey

don't drink a lot of liquid during meals. if u know how a hiatal hernia looks, it's plain and simple. the liquid can't just enter the stomach as easily and then eating at the same time, food going down, well it's not easy on you. causes heartburn, reflux etc. if you drink a lot at meals. carbonated beverages are difficult to tolerate too. also if u can sleep with your head slightly elevated this helps.
stress can aggravate a h. hiernia so try to remain relatively calm if u can with all life's ups and downs.
hope this helps!!!

Thank you both so much! I have stopped coffee and soda all together....it's tough though! No spicy foods...got it! Drink less while eating....got it!

Today I tried eating a banana and it got suck going down.....THAT is painful! I need to eat slower, too....I am working on that.

Thanks again for the advice!
