So, my husband and I went on our "honeymoon" to a local Inn and I ended up having to leave at 4am to go to the ER!!! The doc seemed convinced it was the stomach flu, but I am convinced it was food poisoning. Everyone else was ok, except for me.
We called and ordered food from a local delivery place, then I had to call because our delivery was messed up and cold! They redelivered and my husband and I had different things to eat. I had fettuccine Alfredo with bacon, tomato and peas, he had a turkey sandwich. We ate around 8:30, I went to bed about 10:30 and at midnight I was getting sick. It was HORRIBLE!! Maybe this is TMI, but I had liquid coming out of both ends at the same time!! I was sitting on the toilet with a garbage can in my face. ![]() Anyways, I went to the ER, had 2 liters (I think that's the size) of liquid, morphine and anti-nausea meds. Then they gave me more a different anti-nausea med later, when I was still feeling sick. I felt ok and got up to get dressed, I ended up dry heaving again! They gave me 2 more nausea pills. Then they sent me home with a prescription. I drove home as my husband doesn't drive, but I barely remember the drive, other than I felt sick the whole time. Besides I was completely exhausted and sleepy. I got home around 9am Sunday morning and have been sleeping ever since. Well, obviously except for now. I have had one small applesauce (the lunch box size) and half a piece of toast. I am drinking Gatorade for the electrolytes and vitamins and sugar. I still have liquid bowel movements and don't have an appetite. Anything else I might consider? If I don't feel better by tomorrow I will call my doctor. Sorry this is so long and TMI..... ![]()

I'm glad your feeling better. I just thought I would throw it out there that food poisoning is actually much rarer than we think. I had a conversation with a med student not too long ago and I guess food poisoning is blamed in way too many cases when it's actually something like gastrointestinal ailments. I found that interesting.

I guess the reason I thought it was food poisoning is because I have never been sick like that and it only came about after I complained about some food and they had to redeliver it.

Poor you!!! thats horrible.. i often suffer the trots myself for various reasons, I know what its like!
However - I doubt in this instance it was in fact food poisoning. Had it been FP, it would have lasted quite a bit longer, by a day or two. Sounds to me like you had a short bug that your body was able to get rid of quickly. some people say to take immodium or the like in this situation, but I actually disagree with this. If your body is upchucking or giving you the trots, it means that there is something inside you that needs to be gotten rid of. the best thing you can do is stick with liquids and keep the liquids going, even if you drink a glass of water and then throw it up, you are keeping some of it down. Last year I was sitting in my living room, when i all of a sudden spiked a very high fever (think 103 within five min from normal) and got the trots and puking. Within four hours, i was back to normal. doc says it was gastro enteritis, and my body just killed it off quickly. Glad your feeling better! |
