on friday I hit my foot on the coffee table leg and broke my foot. doctor siad nothing he could do, toes heal on their own. the problem is I'm not getting any sleep. I sleep on my side and stomach. if I sleep on my back I end up with back aches. I lay one way the blankets hurt my toe or I accidentally touch the foot with my other leg and foot. I lay the other way the toe is against the mattress. last night I slept int he rocking chair with my leg hanging over the arm and it was just a throbbing. I triend wrapping it up to protect it from the mattress and the blanket and it throbbed like mad. I need sleep. its so bad my partner tried to give me a back rub last night and I told him to back off before I well he would have been missing one of his favorite body parts.. I need sleep or Im going to tear this appartment apart and go nuts at the same time.

Have you tried elevating the offending foot with two pillows and some pain medication before going to bed?

You may have throbbing no matter what you do. After all, it's been traumatized! I suspect throbbing will reduce as the swelling subsides.
I would've tried a good inch of wrapping just to cushion the tender part from any dings. If the wrapping caused throbbing then it was too tight. You could try that again, just not too tight! Elevation just above waist or heart level is always good to help reduce or manage swelling. Just my opinion here, which is based on nothing but my experience...if it's sleep you want, get in bed alone (reduce chance of further injury) with your foot loosely wrapped, for protection and take 1- 2 (25mg) Benadryl. Night, night!

Thanks to you both. I managed to get some sleep thanks to both your ideas and a very strange one from my partner. we took the idea of wrapping for protection to the extreme at least he did. he cut a hole in a small box then packed my foot on in so that the toe had nothing near it but the rest of the foot and lower leg had a cardboard "cas" and throw pillows. pillow onder upper leg so I could still sleep on side. my foot couldnt touch the mattress and the blankets landed tent like over the foot and box. then I took some Luesta, Ibuprophen and it was nighty night. I feel much better thanks. ![]() |

![]() Make a 'tent' out of something to keep the covers off your foot. This is done in the hospital, so I wonder if there is something you can get at a medical suppy place? If not, place pillows under the covers at the foot of the bed, on either side of where your feet will be; this should help keep the covers from touching your foot. Or, don't tuck the covers in at the foot of the bed and don't cover your foot, let your foot stick out--maybe a loose-fitting sock would keep your foot warm for sleeping. |

great how you got some sleep.
did you ask the Dr. for a short supply of pain meds till the worst is over? that he should do. and drinking ginger tea would be good as that has anti-inflammatory properties in it. actually, anything to lessen the inflammation will lessen the throbbing... so google some nutritional anti-inflammatory foods and herbs and soups and stuff... and you will get past this in no time flat! sorry about it though, it happened to me once, and it hurt like the dickens! I was doing kava-kava, ginger root, valerian, passionflower and skullcap tea by the quart at night, but I went to sleep so willingly, lol, la-la land, there I was! feel better soon! xoxo |
