In therapy last week my therapist mentioned something about information sharing with my kids regarding events that I have survived and the subsequent mental state I am left to work with...... I was completely floored. I have NEVER considered telling my kids about my issues or how they came to be. I'd love to hear how others handle this topic. I'm completely resistant to it but I tend to hide.....

My son knows his parents have BP, take medication and see a therapist. Well he knows our T's name and have met them. He sees us take our medication and knows what each pill does. My past only comes up when he asks a question.

I'm open with my kids about my bp dx and meds. Not so much about past traumas, unless something comes up like they need to know during teen years that there is alcoholism risk that runs in our family.
Other traumas I wouldn't tell them because I don't want to worry them, they have enough going on just trying to grow up in the world. I wouldn't want them to have pictures stuck in their head of mom getting sexually assaulted, etc. But I do give warnings about dangerous people out there. |
