I am a single parent of a 10 year old boy who was diagnosed with ADHD combined type. He takes Focalin when in school and randomly during the summer. We live with my parents who kicked him out in June. So he's staying with his dad for the first summer. I pick him up every week for a couple days. Today he was with gma while I went to work. When I got home he had kicked the door to my entertainment center in and lost my tv remote. Please advise I feel like I'm going to lose it..

Is he in therapy? Can you talk to the prescribing doctor?

You stay with people who kicked your son out? Maybe if you can manage a safe and stable home situation where he is actually included that will help him some.

You do what circumstances dictate. You need to look after yourself.
What do you mean by ADHD combined? This sounds like it is more than an attention or hyperactivity disorder. How, I wonder, is he dealt with after such outbursts? In what way is he held accountable? Is he aware he is responsible for these acts and does he show any indication he is sorry or understands how his actions have impacted you and others (does he have a capacity for empathy)?. If he seems to not understand his responsibility and/or lacks empathy I think the problem is more than ADHD. My step son was a handful. We went from a diagnosis of ADHD to beyond that. He lacked an understanding for responsibility and had no empathy. For example, he was caught stealing. He had no clue about responsibility. As far as he was concerned it was our fault he got into trouble. His thinking was as we gave him no money, and he deserved money, he was entitled to get it by whatever way he could. There was no understanding this was something he had done wrong. Similaiy there was no understanding the people he stole from were impacted. We too endured the destruction of objects as he acted out his frustrations. My recommendations are to find him therapy and to find it for yourself too. If financing this is an issue, go through the school. Most school boards have psychologists on retainer. |

I agree with justafriend. I'm sorry you're in such a difficult situation. I hope you can get therapy for yourself and for your son. Sending big hugs.

It means problems with both inattention and hyperactivity, as opposed to ADD which has none or little hyperactivity.

I don't think staying in such an environment is good for your kid. Bdw, how does he behave at his father's place, any better?

Takes meds randomly? That's a scary thought. Who's idea was that?
![]() That's enough right there to make anyone act crazy. How old are you if you dont mind my asking. The bit about your parents kicking him out rings alarm bells for me. You stay and your child is kicked out? I really don't know quite what to say..... Does your son have a regular therapists? If not I hope you arrange that ASAP.
