Most states allow kids to drive at the age of 16...average age. However about 8 states now allow them to drive earlier than that (15 & 15 1/2). One state, SD, allows a child to drive at 14 1/2!!!!!!!
Well, I guess a year or more ago, the state of NJ changed the age to 17 in an attempt to save kids lives. The teen death rate from teen-driver accidents dropped a full 30% in comparison to its neighboring state of CT!!! That's something to pay attention to as our kids (or loved ones) approach the age of driving, I think! I don't have a link on these study or these stats because I just heard it on Good Morning America and wrote them down. ![]() I wanted to share. KD

I saw this on on the news last night. I think the age should be at least 18. No one should have to go through what our family went through when we lost Joesph. We lost him 2 days before his 17th birthday. He was messing around with his CD's and went off the road.
I think if ppl are older when they are alloud to drive if would save a lot of kids. At least make it where they have to have at least one adult driving with them for at least a year.

Muffy, I had to wait untill I was 18 as well. My husband on the other hand was 16 when he started driving and got his own truck at the same time. He started cutting class and going out driving during school. Getting into trouble with his friends and had an accident.
I know there are some teens that are responsable. But I don't think that a teens brain is up to the responsability. ( all the teens are hating me right now, sorry )

its different here, you can get a provisional licence here at age 16 but you can only ride a bike or scooter on that and you need to do The compulsory basic training course as well
you can start learning to drive at 17 but you have to pass a theroy test and a driving test before you are allowed to drive on the rd i agree that youngsters dont see the dangers we see and can be irresponsible at times and in charge of a motor vehicles this age is to low

It is very scarey here, children as young as 12 may drive HUGE pieces of farm equipment on public roads (going from one field to another). Last spring there was a teeny tiny boy driving a huge corn planter that took up two full lanes and then some.

Here it is 18 before you may start take drivinglessons and Only with a certificated drivingschool. then until you are 21 or so you have the point system.. you have like 3 points and if you lose em all you lose your license and have to do driving exam again... This is because of the high percentage of traffic accidents in this youngest group of drivers.. Appearantly even at 18 or 20 something many are not responsible enough to drive safely.
I doubt I will get my driverslicense before i have a well paying job though as the costs of getting your license easily is 1500-2000 euro's!
