I thought this was a very interesting article.

I just read your title, but it would be a shame because it would only clog up the works for people who ready need disability as the Social Security adm would still have to read all the apps and the Dr Reports etc. making it a longer wait for eligible people to get a decision. Its already a two year wait, and usually recipients are not approved on the first try anyway.

It's interesting but I don't think it is quite the way they make it sound. The headline is fine. There may very well be millions filing for SSD after their unemployment benefits run out. The article (such as it is) makes it sound like a simple matter to apply for and receive SSD when unemployment benefits are exhausted. It gives the impression that healthy people are defrauding the system. I don't think it's that easy to get approved for SSD.

I do think being a Fox editorial, it's sensationalized a bit. But it does make sense that people might view disability as a solution to income. Here is another article on the topic.

I do agree that it's not easy to get on SSI or SSDI, and your diagnosis must affect your ability to do any job - even factory line or gas station cashier. But it did not take me years; I was approved in 6 months with a lawyer doing the leg work, and I had a shrink who has been with me for years fill out the needed paperwork. After 20 years in the workforce I was fortunate in being able to apply for SSDI. My friend who is on SSI gets about $600 or so a month, which wouldn't pay for half my meds. She was denied the first time and it took a while to be approved in California for depression & anxiety.
