Hi everyone,

I just got a fecking letter that said now a family of 2 ( regardless of family size) must meet poverty guidelines for loan to be discharged. I was told my grad loan of $30k was forgiven as long as I'm on Ssdi but not anymore.

I don't know if this is an Obama change or what. Has anyone else received this news?? I'm completely screwed now as the monthly payments are @ $225 for the rest of my life. And Medicare has been cut so plan D for scripts has gone up!

TnT

Hi. I just looked this up and the federal student loan website says that this lookback period goes on for three years. I hate to discourage you further but even if you do successfully keep your TandP status, you will receive a federal tax form 1099-C that you must report when you file your income taxes. Essentially, any amount discharged in this manner is subject to income taxes. You can google student loan discharge disability to review this information. You should probably try to get some advice from a professional about your situation.
Thanks for this!

I don't know....I DO know that most scholarships are no longer true scholarships. If you don't qualify financially, the academics don't matter. My daughter lost a scholarship due to this.
Thanks for this!

Are these federal loans, private loans, etc? It's almost impossible to get a student loan entirely discharged. Sometimes the payment amounts can be reduced, which sounds like what you need .

I've claimed bankruptcy and I'm on SSDI and I still have to pay back my student loans. It's very difficult to have student loans fully discharged. Basically, you have to be at death's door.
