I've been emailing and calling various places around my location looking for answers but so far have found none.
I need to see a mental health professional. I don't have insurance and can't pay full price. Anyone I ask for information on discounted fees or financing options just tells me to apply for AHCCCS. AHCCCS isn't taking me, so I need a new option. Is there anything out there that will aid in paying for me to see a therapist? I'm not concerned about the prescription drugs, I just want to see the doctor first. I'm trying to handle things one at a time. |

Im not sure what your mental health services are in your area .. maybe the Ahcccs.. I assume
![]() Have you called your local health dept? or is that the same? You local hospital should have some info for you .. You can also check with NAMI for your area. DO you have a general / primary care doctor ? They should be able to point you in the right direction. Im sorry this sucks, It should not be this hard to find help .

I am confused when you use doctor and therapist and discounted fees in related contexts; do you want to see a doctor, a psychiatrist, or do you want to see a therapist for ongoing therapy?
If you call a psychiatrist, who is a doctor that generally sees patients for their prescription drug needs, maybe once a month or once a quarter, they are not going to have discounted fees or like that you do not have insurance/can't pay them. If you call a therapist, you might get a sliding scale for therapy but "see the doctor first" doesn't fit. If you want to know if you "should" have therapy, if it would be beneficial to you, etc. I would save up $150, call a psychotherapist and make an appointment, the first one is usually "free" and go talk to them (the $150 is in case it is not free). A therapist's fees usually are personally negotiated, not done by phone/one size fits all. You might not be someone the therapist feels they can work with/help and/or they might not do a sliding fee scale or it might be more than you can do even though it is less than they normally charge, etc. But, talking to someone could educate/help orient you as to what is available and how things work and you could come up with a plan for yourself from there. There are other options/clinics besides AHCCCS, check out this site, for example Mental Health America of Arizona and maybe ask their advice. It might benefit you to buy insurance, even if it does not "pay" anything to a doctor or therapist, it can often better negotiate for you to lower the fees (because it is in effect a "group" discount since many people are in that insurance plan; it's the difference between Walmart and an independent small retailer where you're the independent :-)

i'm sorry you are having a hard time. I had a similar experience in my state. nobody seemed to have the answer as far as where I could go for services. it took a lot of persistence but I finally found help. it's hard especially to find help if we are distressed in the first place.
I wish you luck. ![]() |

Sorry for such a late reply, laptop broke shortly after I started the thread. Thank you for the replies.
@Perna: The confusing terms comes from me having no knowledge of what the difference between a psycholigist and a therpiast, etc. even is. All I know is I need to see someone that can help me with the Borderline Personality Disorder. And I can't afford to just pick up insurance. I literally have zero income and no way to get it. But I will check out that website you listed, thank you. |
