I haven't had professional help (i.e. docs or meds) for a few years now and I've been coping but recently, I've seriously begun thinking about going back to it all. Unfortunately, the first thought that pops into my head was the last time I did an in take for a new patient thing, the therapist asked me "So, who are you?"
Really, that's what you want to start with...is it just me or does that just annoy the crap out of you too? Not, "What do you think you you need help with or what kind of help are you looking for?" and work your way up to that question. But she wouldn't even let me try to go around it, no matter what answer I gave she just kept saying over and over... How is frustrating me or sending me into a spiral a good way to do an intake? And the funny thing is I love a good philosophical debate but not when I'm trying to get help. So what am I supposed to say... I'm not my illness? or should I be more Popeye...I am who I am

Please don't let that deter you if you want help. Even if they do ask it, there could be a lot of general things they are looking for with that question just to see how you respond to identify various conditions, and there is no wrong answer; personally I would answer along the lines of Popeye of "I am who I am", by giving my name.
I hope you find the help you are looking for and will not let this deter you from asking for it. Hang in there meanwhile! ![]()

If they only piss you off, you don't want to see those types

You are right, it won't deter me completely...but I did try to answer her and she wouldn't accept my answers. Sorry, I guess, I was frustrated thinking about all the In-Take questions and the stress of starting over. I know it's worth it.
Thank you!!

I think if I had to start therapy over again, I'd write myself a short autobiography; put in who/what I come from, where I've been, what I have difficulty with (why I'm considering therapy) and what I'd like from therapy, etc. The straighter I can get it in my head and/or the more "stuff" I can get out of my head, the better I can think about it all?
