Can anyone explain why SSDI is subject to federal income tax (after a certain amount) but SSI benefits are not?

That would probably be best answered by the SSA. Call them toll free and ask. Then you can let us know?

When I was approved for SSDI, I was given the the choice on whether or not I wanted taxes taken out. I chose not to. My annul income was to low to require me to file a tax return. That was quite some time ago. I agree SSA will give the info you need.

It's "supplemental" income, not enough in itself to make you rich enough to pay taxes
![]() "While most recipients will not get as much, the monthly maximum federal SSI payment for 2013 is: $710 for an eligible individual" From: http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/subtopic/c/48 It's on the "bottom," not really income but like food or your housing, just there/a necessity.
