Today my therapist told me it is completely possible for me to get disability due to my chemotherapy and the fact that is has now made me immune compromised. The first time I applied I got a "no" telling me I didn't have enough work credits, which is ridiculous since I have been working since I was 16 (I am now 23). To be honest the whole process confuses me and I have no idea where to start if I did the right form the first time I was denied. I am in NY state if that helps. If anyone has any advice please share. I am broke, sick and desperate at this point.

I got denied.

Wonderful.

Even the government would prefer I waste away and die. Comforting. I worked since I was a teenager. Guess it doesn't count for some stupid abstract reason as per usual.

Dear Grey Matter,
Be comforted that you are alive and have survived chemo and have a T that is on your side.
Being denied is usually what happens the first time.
I don't know you or your circumstances so I don't know what you filed for.
You can pm me and advise you from there.
The whole process is confusing. You said that you were unsure if you filed the correct way.
Christina is correct you can apply for SSI, this is for people who do not have enough credits and have limited income.
Have you applied for unemployment? Temporary disability? Workers comp?

You will need a letter from your doctor stating your name age date of birth.
The dates of illness/injury with an dxs.
The reason why you can not work or go to school at this time.
Also include any emotional problems you have or have been treated for, including childhood trauma.
Sincerely,
Happiedasiy
Hang in there, things will improve.

I would get a lawyer to help you with the appeal process.

I totally agree with teresapooh- get a lawyer and you'll have a much better chance of getting approved. Best of luck!!

Yeah, I am going to look into getting a lawyer today. I am currently waiting on the phone to speak to an agent to try and understand exactly why I've been denied so I can work out from there what to do next and how to approach it. I just simply don't understand why I've been denied when they already know I am financially unwell, I am on medicaid.

Also, I'd be sure to find a law firm that only specializes in disability cases! Good luck!!

Some good news;

I called today and spoke to someone who was actually kind (usually I get nasty, rude people) and I explained that I simply don't understand the decision. That all of my doctors have me as "chronically ill/disabled" in their write ups, and that I know since I am on chemo there is temporary coverage for me. He didn't rush, kept looking into my case. And then put me on hold for a bit.

He came back and told me he changed my application and that I was not rejected. He said I have to get through a 120 day waiting period so they can see that my illness/disability isn't going to improve in that time. And that I DO very much fit their legal definition of disabled. I am getting paper work sent to me, so.

I guess I appealed it myself, then. I honestly don't know what happened.
