I was recently diagnosed Schizo-Affective. My current psychiatrists don't want me working or going to school right now. It has been a full year like this. I have been in psyche wards 3 times.

Why do i keep getting denied dissability? It's kinda frustrating that during my ENTIRE healing phase I did not qualify for dissability ONE time. Now I am doing good and well, but I have lived off general assistance and food stamps and Havn't been eating much food. All my money goes to food and rent, I havn't bought any clothes or anything to really take care of myself. I literally lost 45 lbs in the past 2 months.

Like, seriously. It is pretty frustrating. Now I see no point in getting SSDI since pretty shortly I'll be back in the workforce and attending university. Why add the extra hassle of having to admit im dissabled on every application?

But yea just venting and wondering possible reasons why you think my case would continue to get denied. They kept saying that my medical reports show i have capability to handle my emotions and that my resume is good enough to get a job.

I don't know I am kind of in the same boat. I have applied once and was denied right away of course. They deny everyone right away. They didn't even get 25% of my medical records even though I gave them all the info to get them. I got a lawyer and am on appeal waiting for a hearing which can take up to a year and a half. My doctors say I deserve to win. I have no idea if I will. I have been doing good lately and can work but I will crash with depression again and be disabled. They will say look you were doing good....denied.

Did you ever get a lawyer and appeal. it doesn't cost unless you win. They deny like 90% of people on an initial application. You have to appeal.

I missed my time to appeal the first time around. So i applied again and got denied again. Now there is basically no point in it. Also a company works for me and helping me out with issues so they can do the whole process for me free of charge. It's kinda nice.

It sounds like you have SSI. SSDI is literal Social Security and depends on your work history and credits. If you have not worked enough, you can never qualify for it, only SSI, food stamps, etc. But both are given for disability and the disability determination is the same.

It's not true that everyone gets denied the first time. I got approved right away, as have others here at PC.

It doesn't sound to me like you are on SSI. What help you've gotten has been public assistance, which is traditional welfare provided by your state. An application for SSDI is, automatically, an application for SSI, also. You were denied for both. One reason for you getting denied was probably that you being completely disabled was not expected to last all that long, which is how it did turn out. Not that you have to be permanently disabled to get approved, but there has to be the expectation of disability lasting at least a certain length of time. I forget what that length of time is.

The other thing working against you getting approved is that you are quite young. They figure that increases the odds that you would either recover, or find a way to adapt that allows you to succeed in the workplace.

I'm glad you are doing so much better now.

Okay, I just looked up the time requirement. Your disability has to be expected to last at least a year. I've read that in multiple places. I don't think I can give you a link right now because I'm on a tablet and don't know how.
define disability?

The Social Security Administration considers you disabled if:

you are not working, or you are earning less than the earnings limit
your disability is so severe that you cannot do basic work activities such as walking, standing, or remembering
your disability has lasted or is expected to last at least a year or result in death
you cannot do the work you did before you became disabled
your disability prevents you from doing other work
SSDI does not give benefits if you are partially disabled, or if your disability is short-term.

Yea my brother got SSI on first try. It's just learning how to budget 90 bucks a month with 218 in food stamps wasn't easy. Woulda been nice to have something more during my year waiting period.

Did you ever get an attorney? First time I applied I got denied and decided not to bother with the appeal as I was doing part time college at the time and thought there was a chance maybe I could just find a low stress job to add and sort of figure things out well I ended up being incorrect about that. Then second time I also got denied but then got an attorney for the appeal and was approved. But yeah if they think you're condition will not prevent you working for a significant amount of time or is very likely to improve there is a good chance they won't approve you....and if its true you'll be going back to school and are getting back in the work force...applying again would likely just be a hassle, but if school and the workforce proves to be too much and doesn't work out then it might be worth giving it another go.

I think i overcame most of the hurdles ive had to, i don't think ill need dissability honestly. It just woulda been nice for the time i actually did.

I was denied first time...got an attorney and was approved a few months after he filed my appeal...I get reviewed next October.

No one said that everyone gets denied the first time, it was more like 90% (100% would be everyone). And even when someone fits all the criteria, they can still get denied several times. They will find every excuse in the book to deny someone--even if it means they have to lie, which is what the judge did in my case. When I got the "notice of unfavorable decision," it was full of lies; she was accusing me of saying all kinds of things I never said and twisted a lot of my words around, and even claimed certain things were on my medical records that I know were not. I had to read it over several times to make sure I was reading it correctly, and even thought she got my case mixed up with someone else's. Even my attorney was shocked because the things the judge put in the notice were so bizarre. I suggest you do some research and you will find that your case is the exception, not the rule.

I did some research on the percentage of people who get denied on their first application. The percentage I found was 70%. (Does Social Security Disability Deny Everyone the First Time They Apply? | Disability Secrets)

Some of those denied are very appropriate for SSDI, but get denied because they failed to explain their case in a convincing way. Some applicants truly don't meet the criteria. Then some just are the victims of a bad and unfair decision. I've met a few people who had that happen, and it can be very sad . . . even tragic. One individual I met ended up homeless, despite having a crippling disease. I thought it was a disgrace, and I hope he got the legal help that I advised him to seek out.

Shortandcute: It is really disturbing when a deserving person gets denied, even when being represented by a competent attorney. I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope you have not exhausted all your options to appeal. If so, that must feel absolutely awful.

I do know that my positive experience with the SSA is not typical; it's far from the norm. Even my doctor was surprised that I got approved on first try. Believed me, I feel very blessed to have been so fortunate. (I did a great deal of research during the process, which helped me know what I was up against AND what best to do to maximize my chance of getting approved.)
