My mom tried to get me signed up for her life insurance policy and they said I can't be placed on there cause I have a psychiatric relad illness my friend who had a history of suicide attemps had the same thing happen to her a when she tried to apply for life insurance. So it's like what am supposed to be buried in potter's field cause stupid life insurance thinks my funeral is not important enough to be paid for cause I was suicidal this I find odd and unfair

Yes, that is my experience as well. It doesn't matter how long ago your treatment/meds occurred. Life insurance isn't like health insurance where you must be offered a policy.
And don't even think about "fibbing" on the application. It will certainly void the policy. Quote:

I got denied about 20 years ago. I really don't know why, most insurance won't pay up for a suicide. My life insurance is thru work but if I get laid off I am screwed.

I have been denied too for life insurance due to my mental health diagnosis and history. Most have denied but there are a couple that will insure; however, the premiums are so very high, that it worked out about the same cost in premiums as what the pay out would be in a very short period of time (unless I died the day after I got the policy) and not really a benefit otherwise. So I decided it was best just to set that same amount of money aside in savings so funeral expenses and any other "estate" expenses could be covered and not be a burden to my loved ones.

Yeah, been denied too. The'll also deny you if you've ever been treated for substance abuse.

Just create a little savings account for your funeral if that's what you want. You would pay more for life insurance than what you might get. It's "insurance" so governed by statistics. It doesn't matter if you are or are not anything individually, that's just how it has to work; don't take it personally.

Fresia was right on target. It's just a savings account. You can do it for yourself by setting up a small account separate from your regular savings/spending account. If interest rates ever go up you could put the savings in a CD that would earn money just sitting there. The money will add up over the years and it will be enough to cover things.

My doc said I should have omitted the info on depression. Unless they get a release from you HIPPAA prevents the ins company from getting your medical records. Most policies don't pay off for suicide. If you apply and are denied, the insurance company reports the info to the Medical Insurance Board. __________________ Sue Dx: Depression, ADHD |

No one will insure, won't they just rate you up on the premium? Maybe work in corporate america most companies insure employees. I guess that is more you have to save for in burial cost. Be okay and help your family be okay with Urns.

I got my life insurance before my MI came into my life. So I'm fortunate there. Or my daughter is she's getting a big check when I die lol
I'm getting cremated. It's $1500 whereas a grave plot is easily 30-40K. |
