Hello All,

After 5 hospitalizations in a matter of a year and a half, my husband who has schizoaffective is going to start a 3 day a week intensive outpatient program. Through the program he will be recommended to a new therapist within a few weeks and psychiatrist.

He is covered under my insurance and it is considered "good" commercial insurance. Apparently it is NOT GOOD at all for someone who has a mental health condition! He is going to have to pay the $40 specialist fee three times a week. That's $120 a week just in copays for this. I asked the billing department if there was a payment plan and they said "no because no one would ever pay."

How do people expect us to afford treatment?

He has a social security disability case pending. He was denied initially and now is awaiting a hearing. We have an attorney. She is going to request an On the Record Review. If that doesn't work out, the hearing will probably not be until fall of 2018.

Thoughts?

Don't the co-pays stop once you reach your max out of pocket for the year? I'm kind of foggy on co-pays because I'm on a High Deductible Health Plan with HSA attached and there are no co-pays with my plan.

I know, not very helpful when you are looking for ideas. I myself had to cut my 401K deferral down to 1% and shift that money to my HSA account so that I can pay medical bills and that's after taking a loan on my 401k too.

You are probably right about the out of pocket max but I'm not positive on that. I'll have to read up on the insurance plan fine print. We are so lucky that my husband's mother is going to help us out with this financially.
