Just found a site that said narcissism is the biggest epidemic in this time. That numbers are increasing and so on. Professionals have much to say (most echoing eachother with the same findings). I am starting to wonder if any really know what their talking about. I have done much self thinking and trying to empathize with myself to see why I am what I am. It's so easy to say we hide behind a mask and that we make up this false self to gain what we need. You may believe this to be true but I don't think it's so cut and dry. My achievements are not false or made up, the things I am proud of are true. Actual events that took place not just imagined and made to be bigger than they are. I too have goals, some may be larger than others but they do happen and are reached by doing what needs to be done for these to be completed. These "docs" need more help on this subject. Probably just as much as I do!!! Sure it's easy to write of people who do bad things and then generalize amongst the masses but this creates false terms for others to see. Get your head out of your as)$&/: and see that you haven't even scratched the surface with what this is. Pros Bly the same for other people here in different categories. Annoyed by the world at the moment!!!
Thanks for this!

Amen, Brother. But they're in denial and don't want help. . .

Maybe what is needed is a "grass-roots" organization of people with PD's -- but we don't get along well and can't self-organize because of . . . our PD's!!

This, ****ing THIS. I've always hated that "false self" theory because as you said it's way too cut and dry and really does Narcissists a huge disservice. I have actual accomplishments, achievements, things I've done and continue to do that are very much worth being proud of. These things are not exaggerations, they are easily observable from anyone that comes across me in this life.

Funny you posted this, I've been mildly irritated about all the "theories" about NPD as of late. If you want actual facts people like you and me are right here to answer questions. I am one of the people who actually has this disorder, I know things about NPD that only a person with NPD can know. Shocking concept, I know! HA HA HA!

Well did they mean actual NPD or general narcissistic behavior? Because those of us without NPD are constantly being encourage to act more narcissistic. Pad your resume, toot your own horn, try to be the center of attention. The message we're getting all the time isn't to take pride in what you've actually DONE but to make yourself look good.

This life lesson brought to you by 5 years of unemployment.

The "biggest epidemic of our time"? If numbers are increasing, I'm sure it's right in line with numbers for every other mental illness construct that's increasing at the same time, which is probably all of them except for the ones they've dropped or renamed or remixed.

Anyway, NPD isn't even a blip on the map statistics-wise. NIMH doesn't currently deem it worthy of mention in their annual statistics, even though other personality disorders make the cut.. (NIMH » Any Personality Disorder: "Disorders included in this section encompass antisocial personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, and borderline personality disorder.")

And how could narcissism "in general" be the biggest epidemic of our time? What about war, famine, genocide, come on now. I think that type of generalized narcissism will eventually fall out of favor anyway (hopefully before Kimye's purported 2020 presidential run), because it has less and less currency all the time. Andy Warhol's prediction about everyone being famous for 15 minutes and all that. Is there really any value to being on television anymore, or having a photo liked by a thousand people you don't know, etc. etc.? It's so old hat.

Just my 2 cents.

Is this site associated with Dr. Jean M. Twenge?

If so, I would take what she has to say with a grain of salt. She seems to think anything that isn't social conservative and far-right finger wagging is a sign of the selfish "Me" generation. Very one-sided. I read her two books and threw them in the trash.

Addendum: I actually remember in one of her books she mentioned the reason many young people are atheistic or simply not religious is due to the generation's narcissism. Lmfao. Yes, this Ph.D psychologist said that irreligion is because of narcissism, not for instance... Science? Technology? Social progress?
