OCD isn't a "bad feeling" about something.. or having some odd pattens or ideas... even if there is an association with numbers. i hear a lot of people talk about being ocd, or being very ocd... or having it.. when they don't really have it, they have some traits. Yep, you might count your green peas or you might divide the towels into stacks of 4, but some important questions - do you HAVE to? can you choose not to? is it a problem of any kind? how much of your daily life is devoted to the things you do not have a choice in doing? Lots of us will say we need to, we have to or we can't.. but really, if you absolutely HAD to, can you control the behaviour?

Do you get out of bed at 2am because you can't sleep because your mind is remembering how someone might have touched the door handle of the fridge after sneezing but you aren't sure and so you have to bleach the fridge, throw out all the open food, wash and wax the floor and maybe paint the walls for good measure?? THAT is OCD.

Do you see yourself arranging the books on the bookcase over and over and over and over and over ALL DAY because you can't get it to FELL RIGHT? THAT is OCD.

Do you see that what you do or obsess about is nonsensical? Does it upset you that you think these things? Does is take up an hour or more of your day and interupt your functioning? THAT is OCD.

No lie... the criteria for having full blown OCD is simple but specific

must have intrusive thoughts that cause intense distress
unable to rid themselves of those thoughts
performs rituals or actions that are designed to rid themselves of the obsessions and associated anxiety, but these are unsuccessful and must be repeated
you know the obsessions and compulsions don't make sense but can't control it
together the two phases take up more than an hour per day
are seen as problematic and disruptive of normal functioning

There... that is what OCD is. A scattered oddity isn't the same as having ocd... most people have some nonsensical little habits they pick up, and there is certainly a sort of "style" that people who are susceptible to ocd exhibit... and one can have that without having full ocd.

I've had some traits of it, but never full-blown. You are right, there are a lot of criteria that must be met. It is a horrible condition to deal with, but I know you will recover because you are strong. Hang in there and huggles.

I think a lot of people, too, get confused between obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder, a wholly different illness.
