I finally worked up the courage to tell my therapist about my hair pulling. She told my mom (who was already aware of me doing it) that she needs to take me to a doctor to get checked out and see about anxiety meds.

Sadly as soon as we got out my mom started belittling it. She said that I shouldn't have even brought it up as a big deal because she thinks I can stop whenever I want. But anyways I'm getting off track. I want to know what the doctor is going to do and say so I can be prepared for it. Any ideas?

Argh, I hate that attitude, I've had it so many times from my dad. I've never been assessed for meds, but what I had was cognitive behavioural therapy, which worked pretty well - basically I was asked to keep a record of when I pull my hair, where from, how many and what I was doing/feeling at the time, so I could build up a pattern. Once I was doing that for a while my therapist worked with me to come up with other ways to deal with what I was feeling, so that I wouldn't feel the urge to pull my hair out. Your doctor might ask you similar questions when you go for an assessment to try and get a feel of how much it's affecting your life.

Hope the meds work out if you get them, and good luck with the appointment.

Here, check out what the Mayo clinic does (and show your Mom; she'll respect them probably): http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/tri...ents-and-drugs
