Is it true that a person with OCD makes things important than they really are? My subject is watching television. I make a big deal out of watching television and it is of great importance that I watch something that wouldn't make me anxious. So what do I do? I watch stuff that doesn't make me anxious like religious programming for instance. Even some fictional shows make me anxious like some soaps and nightly shows. I cannot get into them because of the anxiety. I wonder if I should just watch these shows even if they are not wholesome in order to face my fears. It is a scary thing but it has helped with one program. The deal is I watch television and the obsessive thoughts about television scare me. I hate having those thoughts.

Good question. Just about everything causes me some anxiety. But I'm still watching, I'm not sure why.

Why do they make you anxious? Watching TV distorts my thinking because most of it is negative and displays poor values and standards. All sitcoms are based around how negative being married is, negativity of having children, negativity of having neighbors. Comedies are based around being neurotic about your body, mind, behavior, society, etc. It really brainwashes you. I have to force myself to watch something that is real and positive whether it's discussion on religion, outdoors, science, etc. TV really sucks you in. Commercials are horrible, as well - they set/portray trends, standards and values that make little sense.

I watch a lot of anxious shows, like the Hoarding shows (make me anxious about my mess), dramas like Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story. So, not the calmest shows lol. It's my excitement for the week.

Yes, this is true. I not only put extra importance on objects like tennis balls (for some reason I just like them), but you can ask anyone, if plans change, I obsess over it for WEEKS. It's the most important thing in the world to me that everything goes as planned.

Thank you for your answers. I am afraid of seeing characters and situations that are not "safe" like adultery, messy divorces, paternity issues, and even sometimes those involved in those things. However, it seems that sex scenes I find scary as well as seeing someone being bullied. It is scary to me and I "feel" the importance of them, yet I realize that they are important in reality.
