Title says it all. I find myself doing it all the time. I use to only pick my eyelashes when my eye was bugging me like if a lose eyelash got in my eye then my mom said she'd pick at her eyebrows and I started doing that. Since then it just got worse. I almost pick all the eyelashes off my right eye but I can't seem to be able to stop myself.

Ps. Sorry if this is not where this goes wasn't quite sure where.

I'd say this is the right place, since I'm pretty sure that's a form of trichotillomania.
Do you do it out of boredom, or is it stress related?

For almost 10 years after 9/11 i pulled all my eyebrows out with tweezers to the point of bleeding. How to stop is hard to understand or remember. But in reflection it was because i was hospitalized without the tweezers for 10 weeks and it went away because someone was always with me and i wouldnt do it in front of them. I am so sorry you are having to deal with trichotillimania. You certainly seem to have it with all the pulling u are doing. Good Luck, I know it is hard.

Well for me it's not that bad but I really don't care who's around me. Ill do it at school, home, a playground, anywhere. Ill stop myself for a few min but then I start again. It's frustrating.

I've really been doing this for the past 4 years roughly but it hasn't been this bad. I mean 1/2 my eyebrow is practically gone! Both of them but the right side is worse. I don't know what to do or how to stop.

Try sitting on your hands or folding them behind you when you catch yourself plucking. That's how I broke the habit of cracking my knuckles (though not before the joints got swollen and knobbly, unfortunately).

I downloaded apps to my iPod to help me keep track of when i do and when I don't pick at them. I have that same issue, cracking my knuckles. That will be my next bad habit to break

I picked my eyebrows for years only stopping when i was admitted to psych as an inpatient for 5 weeks and they took away my tweezers. I have not started again and still to this day dont know what keeps me from starting again. It gave me such comfort and safety to pick.

Though I haven't been diagnosed, I would definitely say I have trich. It sounds like you do, as well. The advice I can offer is minimal, but to try and limit how much you tweeze your eyebrows try and do it to keep it in the shape of your brow. That's what I generally do. Unfortunately, I compensate because I pull everywhere. My eyebrows, my eyelashes, my hair, my legs, etc.

I have a "habit" of pulling in my eyebrows and lashes since I was a child.. I don't know f it's part of OCD. But my son... He compulsively strokes at his eyelashes when watching tv, doing homework, watching tv, at school. He's only been doing it for a couple months so I don't know what the trigger was for him...
He gets mad whether I gently prompt him to stop or flat out tell him to stop! If his fingernails are dirty Im concerned he will get an infection..

I have been diagnosed with trich and yes, you definitely have it too. I started working with this in september, and I have seen a T specialized in cognitive behavioural therapy once a week since January.

What I have doon is to try and assess risk situations. When do I tend to pull? How do I feel? In my case it's mostly about being bored/stressed/depressed. I have kept a journal and writing down sone sentences every hour about what I am doing and how I am feeling. In that way I could soon see my pulling pattern.

The next step is the difficult one - trying to create new ways for your mind to think. In my case, I sometimes never even notice that I pull until it's too late - and by then it's difficult to stop. But try and be aware of your risk situations and write a note with things you could do to keep your hands busy: knitting, doodling, rub them with hand lotion, press then against each other etc. Take a deep breath and think "do I really want to do this? How will I feel if I do it, in a long term perspective? And how would that feeling change it I don't pull?"

i have been struggling with this for a few years now, just in my eyelashes, and it is to the point where i have NO eyelashes. a few months ago i got real fed up.

i went to sephora and bought a pair of fake eyelashes. now i know what youre going to say-i didnt buy a pair of crazy black, long and thick ones that make me look like some street walker. i bought a very sparse pair, and when i got home i even trimmed them down some more.

the reason this works for me:
i am a person that feels very self conscious. I know that if my hands go anywhere near my eyelashes when i am wearing fake ones, and i pull off the strip of lashes, i am not only going to look like a weirdo for wearing fake lashes during the day, but i am going to have a weird bare strip where there is no eyeliner that came off with the glue. and i dont want to look like that. kind of a shallow reason, but hey, whatever works.

ive used these:
Sephora Collection Fringe Benefits Lashes item number 1504901 and
Makeup Forever False Lashes in 105 (Julia)

i also bought the Duo glue in clear- although i think i might purchase the black one as the clear takes a little while to dry and i look a bit odd walking around with white spots in my eyelashes if i had to run out of the house. i put a little bit of mascara on to clump the lashes a bit so they dont look too perfect.

i basically wear them all the time, i am a regular pro putting them on now, takes me less time than it did when i actually had eyelashes to put mascara on. i dont notice them either. i even sleep in them- the glue lasts around 24 hours. i even do yoga in them, and i get real sweaty in yoga.

my eyelashes are growing in ! and when they grow in enough, i am planning to just use individual lashes as a deterrent, instead of strip lashes.

hope i helped !

I've pulled my left eyebrow out for 5/6 years (I'm only 19 now) and at the moment it is so patchy its basically bald. Because of the patchiness and wanting to keep it hidden I have a big side fringe to cover it up. Recently I've been pulling more than usual, my anxiety levels have gone up (I know its trich' and anxiety related) and just want to stop, the funny looks people give me and the shame I feel when I do it in secret is getting unbearable. I'm relieved I'm not the only one in this boat though, makes me feel like I'm not so alone as I've always felt dealing with it... I mentioned it to my doctor before at Uni, she prescribed Beta Blockers to calm my heart rate, refuse to take them on the basis that theres really bad mental side effects linked to them. Any one else taken them? If so, have they worked?

- sorry its so long, I've just joined, need help and answers. This condition is really confusing me and no one else I talk to (friends, fam, uni people, work colleagues) understands.

I understand what you’re going through, I had the same problem since elementary school. I started using different techniques to stop myself, like clipping my fingernails, finding a hobby, or coating my eyes with Vaseline. What really help me was hypnosis, I use to listen to an mp3 track every night until I no longer had the urge. Check out my blog if you want to learn more haireyelashcure.blogspot.com/

ugh I just started this and I'm trying not to think about it in case it 'sets' the idea in my mind. I already skin and eye pick as a coping mechanism with my OCD and use tweezers to pull out those wiry hairs on my chin or around my mouth but last few days I have felt one of those hairs that gets caught when you blink and keep trying to find and remove it with tweezers.

I pulled about 6 or 7 the other day but managed to stop. Now Im wondering if its really bothering me or is it just another calming measure rearing its head

I have liked to put argan oil to put on my eyelashes. I don’t always feel like I have something poking me in my eyes anymore and I haven’t pulled on them since I got the kit!!! Argan oil is good for eyelash growth!!!!

For me it gets worse during the school year during summer it still happens just not as often and I can stop myself more easily. I want to get a stress ball that I can play with to keep my hands busy so they can play with that and not my brows.
I also search through my hair constantly to find my split ends and pull those out as well.

It's really annoying when you pull them all off so you can't wear makeup for a few months for a special occasion or when needed.

Trich is one of the most frustrating compulsive behaviours I think. I have been pulling my hair and picking my split ends apart for... Oh I guess almost 10 years now. I have a myriad of other obsessive compulsive behaviours, but the worst are the trich and the food obsession... I think it is how I cope with my PTSD, though I know it only makes it worse. I was blown away when I realized it had a name and that I'm not the only person that does it.
So if all you're doing is pulling your eyelashes/eyebrows be happy that's all you have to deal with and if you think it's progressing to something more serious, get help for it if you can. I'm 26 now and wish every day that I'd gotten help when this started.

Hi Kitkatluver:

Although I couldn't find the blog, as kmdunklin said trichotillomania is one of the areas in which hypnosis has been shown to have very good results. The key is to find a competent hypnotherapist. Your family doctor may not know one, but often they will know who to refer you to that will know of one.

Good luck.

I wish I was only dealing with this. I also have frequent "episodes" of self harm or food obsession (overeating, restriction, only eating pure foods, ect)
The trichotillomania makes it worst though because it shots my self esteem to hell which either triggers the others or just flat out makes it worst.
