Turns out shaving and plucking for personal grooming can really make you want to compulsively pick and pluck at your hair... or is it just me? ugh i hate myself for feeling the need to do this.

It always had that effect on me too. I switched to waxing, at least it comes back less coarse.

I'm a guy and have a bit of trictotillomania which manifests more as twirling hairs or pulling at them but not pulling them out. I need to keep my face clean shaven so I won't pull at my beard hairs, and need to keep my hair short so I won't twirl it too much. So for me, razors and haircuts are my friends.

I have a little cosmetic spot I have to deal with (not going into detail because I'm embarrassed) but I sometimes keep going when I shouldn't to other areas, a pluck, a pick, a shave, all that. One thing leads to another.
It's so tough when you're in the midst of it and even harder when it becomes habitual, but just setting a rule to stand by does help me. One rule at a time. Making a plan why I want to change something and how I will benefit. When I can follow the rule, it's really rewarding to see myself make the progress. But it is hard, getting on and off the roller coaster. Good days and bad days. I think my biggest problem is I forget sometimes that I need better/healthier perspective to stop it. |
