Does anyone have a memory of something they think may not have happened?

Hello defyinggravity65: Well... I don't know as I have any particular memories of things that may not have happened. However, I have quite a lot of very "shadowy" memories... memories that are so long ago, & so vague, that I only have the vaguest recollection of them. I also have a lot of memories where I don't know if I really remember them, or if what I remember is something my parents later told me about having happened years later. I'm an older person now & much of my young life has long since faded into the distance. I have read that memories are not at all as solid as we would like to imagine. And in fact it is possible to implant memories of things that never happened into peoples' minds. So I'm always cautious about assuming any memory I have is actually accurate.

My brother and I have a memory of something that actually happened, we were both there, but we can't agree on what exactly happened to who.

We were probably 9 and 6 when it happened.

I told the story a few years ago, and he said, "no, that's what happened to me, not you." I don't know whether to trust my memory of what actually happened, or his.

Yes, I do all the time. I think mainly of conversations I had and reword it to the way I like it but then I lose what actually happened and have no idea what was part of what actually happened and what I made up. This usually happens to things that I truly care about, which is awkward, but... I don't have any advice on how to get rid of this though sadly. But my mind now is confused on what is and isn't reality. Well, for certain things anyways.
