What goal are you working toward right now, and what are you doing to ensure that you achieve it?

I'm working towards one more year of school so that I can become a nurse. I'm working in a dialysis clinic, that I hate, to get more "hands-on" experience....

Great goal Pat. I'm working on my disorders right now so that I can get back into school and actually finish a degree.

What about you inky?

Gosh, the better quesion is what's 'not' my goal. What is your goal? Currently, I'm striving for a better self-esteem and improving my way of thinking to be more positive. I'm doing individual therapy and group therapy to help in reaching those goals. I know it's going to take me years, but I'm in it for the long haul. What is your goal?

I definately want to take the leap of faith and move out of the parents house. I'm working on it but i'm not making anymore money so things are going slow untill that happpens.
But other than that i have a million ideas that i have to tame somehow....dog sled racing, sailing across the ocean, buying a house, revolutionizing the world, going to school,....you know pretty much just taking it easy

I'm trying to get to a place where I believe that goal setting means something. My experience: Man plans, God laughs.

Hi Ryan,

Nice topic. The goal I am working towards right now is to get to a place where my goals don't bite back at me; where I don't constantly compare myself to more successful people in my age group.

It's gradually getting better.

Cheers, Myzen. What is your goal?

I like your goals, Angle. "Peace of mind" is desirable to me, too. You know, I am a "wordsmith," and the first thought that popped into my mind when I "find peace of mind," is whether we find it or whether we cultivate by learning various techniques that help us to cope more constructively with stress, people and situations.

And thoughts about finding versus cultivating peace of mind -- and perhaps some others verbs that describe how we achieve, earn, learn peace of mind that I haven't thought of yet?

This is an awesome thread and I have enjoyed every single post.

I think we can find joy here and there, but for those of us with metal illnesses, we must cultivate ourselves to get to the point of "peace of mind". By using "cultivate", I mean we must take care of ourselves like we take care of a small, struggling plant. We water it, we place l it in sunlight, we noursh it with plant food. We provide what it needs to flourish, and that is what we need to do for each of us.

We can't just jump to the "peace of mind" phase without working on the steps before it. I haven' forgotten my past, but I have been through therapy enough to know that my anger toward it is honest, and I accepted that I own it. Then, for the most part, I put it away. I have PTSD, so that was hard to do. That was one small step.

I've had to work on all the small steps to make my way toward peace of mind. Am I there yet? Not yet, but I sure am closer to it than I was when I started therapy. Do I have setbacks? Sure I do! Iv'e had more triggers in the last three weeks than I've had in ages. I became a wreck. I leaned on what I'd been taught and on my friends here and I am coming out of it.

I have one single thing thing hanging over my desk so I see it everyday. It's a quote by Booker T. Washington. It says: "Success is to be measured not so much by the positon that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed."

Sometimes you have to hop a lot before you can take off and soar.

January

Awesome post Jan!!! That's a quote that I have loved for years. Thanks for the reminder. I'm so happy that you have learned the tools to charge through the setbacks hurled at us by the evil demon I refer to as life. Very inspiring.

I said I've learned the tools, I didn't say I use them each time. What is your goal?
