invented by the psychiatric profession?

According to Wikipedia it is a combination of hostility, emotional overinvolvement and criticism—how on earth can that refer to something which sounds like catharsis?

Actually, I had to look up "euphemism" in Wikipedia before I could reply.

It's pretty close. When I was a paralegal, we used to call death caused by a surgeon a "surgical misadventure".
