I dont know if im doing this right but going to try making a poll

Reason Im asking is cause sometimes I get asked where I live and I took a computer class at clinton community college a couple years ago and in it they said never tell people on line where you are. They advised things like making up places or saying you are from places you are not from.

I made up this thing that's taped to the side of my computer to remind me what to say when people ask me where Im from instead of telling them where Im from.

I dont orignially live in NY just staying here during classes so i chose this dead mining town I heard of in a science class. The town was called Tahawus (which is a bit of a screw up choosing that on my part cause the town was dead before I was even born and the mine was shut down by the time I was a year old, anyone googling it would see through that in a second) I also picked some other little towns my dictionary said has under 2000 people in it to be from and lived in.

I was wondering if others do the same.

Personally, I'd rather just tell people that I'm not comfortable disclosing personal information, rather than lie. In my opinion, lies just make a person less trustworthy.

Well, my screenname speaks for itself!

However, I have a very common last name and the Valley of the Sun has over 7 million residents. So, I'm not really worried that someone is going to look me up.

Besides, I used to be involved with legal type things and pretty much know how to take care of things if I should ever become victim of harassment of any form. So, I'm really not worried.

For the record, tho, I never intentionally give out specifics, like full name, address, phone number, etc. Anything that would make it a cinch to find me. That would be just plain stupid.

It depends. I won't tell more than my state but sometimes I'm more general and just say I'm from the midwest.

If I'm comfortable with people, I will tell them my general location. If I'm not comfortable, then I won't. I choose not to lie and make stuff up because there is enough of that on the net and I don't want to contribute to it.

I'm not really afraid of people knowing where I am anyway. If someone wants to come track me down then so be it...they can just deal with me and my peacemaker when they get here!!

I’ve shared the wealth with SO many people irl about this site that I’ve started to be very… discreet about information. I do silly things like changing the sex of the person I’m talking about in a story I’m telling so that if one of the people that I’ve told about the site stumble in, they’re not positive it’s me. There are things I’ve posted on this site that I haven’t even told my best friend, nor do I wish her to find out. To that end, I tell very few people where I’m actually located.

Truth is, it doesn't matter if you tell people where you're located or not. If they want to find you, and they're creepy enough to start tracking peopled down, all they need to do is start trying to find your IP address.

There's a chic I know of that has an online journal...and she claims to have this cult~like following going on. She's really messed up!! She states that she tracks people's IP addresses and a bunch of other BS.

Yeah, you could track IP addresses, but anyone that has that much energy for creepiness needs way more help than any of us. LOL!!!

For me it’s not a matter of whether or not someone will “find” me, it’s a matter of privacy. I’ve shared a great deal of sensitive information of my life here. If my brother for example were to find the site, he’d recognize me immediately because there is nothing I’ve posted here that I haven’t said to his face verbatim. But the other posts about sexual abuse and things like that, the only person that I’ve shared 99% of it is my husband. I think this is an extremely helpful site and I’ve distributed the link to many family and friends, I would feel very uncomfortable if one of those people stumbled upon that information. By the same token, I would not like to discover anything sensitive about a loved one that they had not decided to share with me directly.

There are many PC friends that I’ve exchanged real names, addresses and phone numbers with. I’ve discussed issues that are somewhat specific to this region with members living very close to me. I’ve discussed my location in open chat. BUT, I am fully aware that privacy is just an illusion in this information age, I need enough ambiguity for plausible deniability for my own comfort level to share opening and honestly.

I would never tell my real address, or phone number, not unless I actually knew them. In my case I would never tell a family member other than my daughter about this site. This is a good site, but it's not like a facebook, or myspace.

Cause you figured out that may not be where Im truely attending classes or because I make up fake places to live but post an actual college that I may or may not be attending?

either way I agree its funny that I did that. and yes I did that on purpose because I have posted that school before so when I made the post this morning I thought it would look even funnier if I had chosen adirondack Community college, plattsburgh state, Juliard, Potsdam which are on my list here. I make up bios to keep myself safe but at least I try to be consistant LOL

Everyone has a pretty good idea where I'm from, because I don't care. I'm from a city of a few million people, I've got nothing to worry about.

People I know on here have my email, my phone number(s) and one or two have my actual address. I'm just discriminating about who gets what information.
