I agree with Elysium3006 about the IP.
In any case I tell people the city I live in yes, sometimes even the area or subway station, if count that some people don't even know how I look it doesn't really metter. Usually just a city or an area is good enough of an answer for people I talked to... Well I don't ever really tell my adress, apt. or anything like that, and I see that it would be kind of strange if someone online wants to know that... maybe a phone number if I talked to the person enough and I am interested. Otherwise I find it pointless to give out the phone number and waist my time even once talking to the person on the phone. There are strange people out there for sure, but for the most part I see no danger. In any case, I talk online a lot, dated some people from the Internet faced some not interesting or not the most polite people, but nothing worse... |

Well, the most personal I go is the county I live in, and only when I'm talking to other people from upstate New York because I find it interesting to find other members live close by

http://forums.psychcentral.com/showt...t=96271&page=5, you were making up stories? I'm not trying to be rude, but I just don't understand what the point of that was? ![]() ![]() For me, I think it is better for me to just say I'm not comfortable sharing that information, than to lie and make myself less trustworthy. I agree that I need to keep myself safe, but I don't know that I want to make others feel unsafe while doing that. I wish you well in your journey. ![]()

For me it depends on who I'm talking to. I don't give out my information to everyone because it's of no concern to everyone where I am from. But even if I do tell the person where I'm from, I don't give much detail in my answer. If someone begins asking for my name, well, that is something they have no need for and that is when I choose one of my other "identities", each of which has its own name, postal code, age, background info, etc... .
Something such as MySpace or FaceBook, those I don't use as I feel those aren't exactly trustworthy sites for me to give information to or put up pictures of myself or others. |

I sometimes mention the country that I am from, because I am in the minority here (South Africa) but that is as far as I'll go. I'm also not too worried about being found, it's just a privacy thing.

I sometimes share the information of the town I live in but not often, I have given people my full name and cell phone number but I have to get to know them first. Of course all they have to do is add me on facebook and my information is there, I guess I am not to worried about being tracked down, guess I figure I can protect myself if that were to happen.

If I tell someone my location, I keep it general. I do not post my specific city on community sites like MySpace, nor do I post the school(s) I've attended or, if I worked, where I was working. Makes it quite easy to find you. I've seen on a talk show (no longer airing) how people can use very little information to track you, such as the weather: If you live in, say, CT and mention it's cloudy, it's possible for a person to narrow where you live or places you hang out at simply by looking at the weather report for CT to see which areas are cloudy today. I've seen how the most innocent things you post can be used against you. If someone sees a kid has posted one of those big surveys with questions like, "What's your favorite ice cream?" or "Hamburgers or hot dogs?" and they get a hold of your phone number (for instance), he might be able to convince the kid or a friend that he knows you, who might give him more information to find the kid. There are other scenarios, but you get the idea.
All that said, I still post information (such as on those surveys), because I want to enjoy the Internet, and I don't want to let fear keep me from that. I believe in taking reasonable precautions. I mean, you'd have to avoid a lot of fun stuff if you really wanted to be safe on the Net. And totally avoid it to be 100% safe...or actually, there is a small possibility of people finding you or contacting you even if you don't use computers or Internet, because people finders include addresses of people who aren't computer users. Trust me, I know.

I tell people where I'm from. I really don't care. No one knows what my real name is to start with. And if they did find out what my name was it wouldn't matter. My name is so common that there are at least 5 people in the small town I live in with the same name as I have.
