I am so happy and I can't wait to try it! I was shopping yesterday afternoon and came across an in-car coffeemaker on clearance for $4.98. I bought it! It's a cute little 5-cup typical looking coffeemaker that plugs into the lighter adapter. After the Pads season ends (overnight shelters), I will be on my own for food. With this in the car, I will be able to make my own coffee, tea, soups, ramen noodle cups, and other stuff. Just put whatever in the coffee pot for regular food and turn it on to heat up! I can cook in my car! I get almost nothing for money in food stamps, but I can get some stuff from a food pantry. This should be great!

Inky, I remember watching a thing about camping and car travel and people wrapped food in foil and put them in specific places near the engine for cooking. I remember baked potatoes and roasted veggies. Odd what I choose to remember. Never tried it but maybe I will. Good luck with your coffee pot. Might I suggest that if you are cooking ramen noodles add only a bit of the seasoning due to sodium, and maybe you can find canned veggies at the food shelf to throw in?

I've also heard about using the heat from your engine to cook food wrapped in foil. I think you need to use really heavy-duty foil. There were specific places to put things and how long to drive around before a particular food would be done. It's gotta be on the internet somewhere, right?

I was going to try it out last night. I poured water into the reservoir(sp?) and it leaked out the bottom. I checked everything for something I could fix, but it needs to be returned. Maybe I can find another one somewhere. I never heard about using the car engine to heat food, very interesting. I suppose we have all at least thought on a hot day that an egg could fry on it--not that would be good for the car, of course.

You know that crazy car talk show on NPR? I bet those guys know about the car cooking thing. Seems to me they referred once to a book on the subject. I remember hearing them read out the Salmon baking instructions for under the hood. The Car Talk website will probably pop right up on a google search of that name.

Inky, you are truly inspirational. I suppose to you it seems something like doing the obvious, but let me tell you, you are special.

Hey Inky, Look in the library for this book on cooking on a car engine, "Manifold Destiny" by Chris Maynard and Bill Scheller, let us know if it works

You know it's kind of ironic, but your car, while your salvation in one sense, is a curse in another. It is the ownership of an "asset" and the receipt of the five hundred dollars to pay for it that keeps your food stamp allowance so low. Being the devious rodent that I am, I can't avoid musing out loud that if you were able to transfer or conceal the ownership of that vehicle, you could... well you get the idea.

My dear Sqrl, it was so good to meet you this weekend! I'm glad you enjoyed the PB&J sandwich that I shared with you. You looked hungry and had those cute but beady little dark eyes. I am surprised, though, that with all your friends here who adore you, you wouldn't even share the PB&J with a fellow sqrl who came running up looking for some. Instead you ran away quickly up the tree. It's okay, though, since I had a bagel to share with him, but it was plain--YOU got the PB&J! Everytime I see a sqrl running around I think of you and the fun we have all shared around here.
