The job I just started is so dang boring! People say that it will pass. Not unless you can get me set up to have a continuous IV of a Mudslide Mocha from Borders! OMG! This is buttwork--never get up, all desk. Phone and computer is nice, but MY GOD! I sit in this <tiny> little cubicle. It is so tiny that it's not even a cubicle, it's more like a cubette. I need a job with a bit more excitement. This thing has none. Seriously. Maybe I should buy some espresso beans and gnaw on them throughout the day, pop some caffeine pills, and wash those down with Mountain Dew. Or maybe some kind-hearted doctor would write me an Rx for a stimulant medication? Lord help me. Maybe I'll have to try that and just start popping anything similar to a stimulant and see what happens. LOL, I'll get sick, that's what will happen. I know, I shouldn't do that. At least I wouldn't be so damn bored.

Could you smuggle a book in with you and read that as you work?

I wish that could be done so easily. My only "excuse" right now will be that I am new. I can say that I wanted to read the materiel more for information on procedures, but that can only go so far.

Oh my, can I relate... I have a similar situation where I have a boring, repetitive job and have to sit at a desk all day long. It’s mind numbing, isn’t it? I have a supply of green tea or Vanilla Coke at my desk for those times where I might doze off. Good for staying awake, not so good for the waistline. Maybe try the smuggle a book thing; put it between a binder or folder to be less conspicuous? Doodle on paper if you’re so inclined, write something (I keep Word minimized on my screen for that). I think in a case like this, mental attitude is key. I treat it almost like a game or challenge in a way. I know that probably doesn’t help much, but I do understand what you’re dealing with. Take it one day at a time for now and good luck...

I start new jobs often (I'm a consultant) and usually they aren't ready for me the first few days that I'm there. So I just sit there and write 'planning' lists of things I want to do while I'm there, skills I want to acquire, goals I want to have reached before I leave, etc. Keeps me entertained, anyway!

What exactly are you doing for them, anyway?

you sound pretty distraught.
I know coffee can get me to do things I wouldn't do ordinarily.
mundane things that bore me: cleaning my room, organizing my clothes, washing my clothes...doing a boring job.
how did you end up in a boring job?
what would you rather be doing?
did you have a job you liked?
why can't you do this job till you get one that interests you more?
gosh, sorry but that's what I might do.
I found a job I love most of the time.
So I lucked out.
I spent 29 years working in jobs I liked somewhat....
but now as fate would have it I like my job (most of the time).
There are always things about jobs that are boring and hard,
challenging and life changing.
well there you go...
I can't wait till I can retire...
SS will probably be yanked by that time so my dreams of retiring are probably inane.
work, we all need it.
keep what you've got till you find something better and switch...
does that make sense?

Inky - Maybe you can ask your boss if he/she has more for you to do? If the answer is No, and you're found read reading a book...well, how annoyed can they be? And if the answer is Yes, you might find yourself less bored, and you will have shown your boss that you want to succeed there.

Instead of reading, how about writing letters to your kids? Remember how cool it was to receive mail when you were little? And if you think your ex won't let them have mail from you - save the letters for the next visit and hand deliver them.

Take care. emmy
