During the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, Clark accidentally shot Lewis in the arse. They were hunting, lost track of each other, and then Clark mistook Lewis' buckskin trousers -- partially visible through the brush -- for a deer. The musket ball "pierced both buttocks," according to accounts written by the Corps of Discovery. Guess it gave Lewis incentive to keep walking and not sit down as well; it wasn't a severe wound. If the teacher had emphasized these kinds of Three Stooges moments more in elementary school, I'd have fancied this period in history a whole lot more. head full of worthless trivia Ta. Cheshire Cat

Licensed London taxis (otherwise known as black cabs) are required by law to carry a bale of hay at all times. This dates from the days of the horse drawn cab and the relevant law has never been revoked.

Ants can live under water for up to 2 weeks. (Think about that next time you try to drown an antbed with your hose!)

Quote:
I thought this was a thread for worthless FACTUAL trivia...
not philosophical religious leanings:
Human existence is possible because the constants of physics and the parameters for the universe and for planet Earth lie within certain highly restricted ranges. John Wheeler and others interpret these amazing "coincidences" as proof that human existence somehow determines the design of the universe. Drawing an illogical parallel with delayed-choice experiments in quantum mechanics, they say that observations by humans influence the design of the universe, not only now, but back to the beginning. Such versions of what is called the "anthropic principle" reflect current philosophical and religious leanings towards the deification of man. They produce no evidence to support the notion that man's present acts can influence past events. Furthermore, their analogies with quantum mechanics break down on this point. The "coincidental" values of the constants of physics and the parameters of the universe point, rather, to a designer who transcends the dimensions and limits of the physical universe.
Ugh. Apparently, you missed my follow up post:
"Not strictly trivia perhaps... but hopefully it gets ya thinkin'.

Ok, so I couldn't resist dropping in and posting to this thread. Guess I'm not quite quit of the place yet. "

Guess I should have resisted.

In case you think broadband is fast:

In preperation for the data to be collected when the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator goes online, scientists recently ran a test of a parralel data transfer system. The total volume of data transmitted between CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research near Geneva, and seven sites in the US and Europe - amounting to 500 terabytes - would take about 250 years to download using a typical 512-kilobit per second household broadband connection. They sustained an average continuous data flow of 600 megabytes per second for 10 days.

Firehouses have circular stairways because the engines were at one time were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to climb straight staircases.
